Explore the step-by-step process of adding doors to your AutoCAD design, from copying the desired door from the class-provided residential blocks file to placing and modifying it within your plan. Learn how to switch between layers, mirror your door to the correct side of the wall, and adjust its color and rotation as necessary.
Key Insights
- The process starts by copying the desired door from the class-provided residential blocks file, which contains various elements like furniture, doors, and plumbing fixtures.
- Placing the door in the design involves switching to the correct layer and pasting the door, then using commands to modify its placement, orientation, and layer as necessary.
- AutoCAD users can utilize specific commands to mirror the door to the correct side of the wall, adjust the door's rotation, and even create additional wall space if necessary.

Now let's add in our doors. To begin, we need to download from our class the AutoCAD Frontier Design residential blocks. Open that blocks file and you'll see it's full of furniture, doors, and plumbing fixtures and more.
We will use this to populate our plan. We will also go back to our proposed plans PDF and this will help us determine which door goes where. So let's go ahead and jump right into this blocks CAD plan and look for this door category and we'll zoom right in and the door we're looking for is the door int for interior 32 × 80.
Select that door and you want to do control c on your keyboard to copy. Control c, that copies it. Then go back to our floor plans and here in our main file in the model space we're going to type in layer and we're going to change the layer to a door new.
So double click that a door new layer and we should see current layer a door new. Close our layer and let's zoom into the powder and pantry area and now we're going to paste the door. We can right click and do paste or control v and that pastes it and you might notice it turned a light blue cyan that's because it's on the correct layer.
So all we need to do now is click to place the door. Let's zoom into the top side of the pantry right up here and we'll click one time and you might say oh it's on the wrong side of the wall and it's the wrong color and you're right. We have to do a couple things to modify this.
First we'll select it and go to properties. Sometimes it doesn't stay on its layer properly so if we go to its layer it went to layer zero because that's where it came from and we'll go back and change it to a door new. Then we need to mirror it down into the pantry.
We'll select the door and we'll type in the command mirror m-i-r-r-o-r enter and we'll go from midpoint to midpoint on the door jam midpoint to midpoint. Do you want to erase your source objects? Let's go ahead and say yes. There we go so we placed one of our doors.
Now we'll select it and this time we'll copy it with the c-o to copy. C-o copies within a drawing and right click or control c is kind of copying from a different drawing. So I'll click right on that door hinge area and I'll click right here in the powder room one time click that places the door and you're right it's not rotated correctly.
Now we'll select the door and we'll use another command called rotate r-o-t-a-t-e rotate and we'll click on the hinge one time and if we have ortho turned on all we have to do is move our mouse and the door will rotate. Let's click a second time and it puts it right where it belongs. Easy peasy.
So that's d1 and d2 our two doors. All right now let's move our view here to upstairs. We've got a d3 and a d4 and we'll conquer those now.
Let's go ahead and grab one of these doors again. I'm going to grab the door from the pantry and do c-o to copy. I'll click right on that door's hinge point click one time and then going to go right to the bathroom and click right here click and there it is.
Now we'll select it one time and we'll do the mirror command enter and we'll go door jam to door jam erase the source objects we'll go ahead and do no. All right so now we've got the two doors and we want to move this one up to d4. Let's go ahead we'll delete it and let's finish this door first.
So what do we need? We need some more wall space. It doesn't quite reach right so we'll change our layer we'll type in layer and we'll change our layer to a wall new double click makes it current and we'll type in the line command and we'll start right here at the end of the existing wall click one time move our cursor to the left and it will kind of tell us the dimension. If we hold our cursor still for a moment we see it's exactly 10 inches.
Now I like to type in dimensions to make sure they're accurate so let's type it in 10 inches enter and then we'll go down the wall thickness six inches enter and then back 10 inches enter. There we go now we have enough wall space but we need to demo out this little wall end so we can select it and we'll change its layer instead of a wall exist we'll change it to a wall demo and just like that we get the warning which is okay it's going to move it to a layer that's been frozen and that's a okay we don't want to see it in our proposed plan. All right so that bathroom looks really well done now we can select the door co to copy click right on its hinge point to be accurate click one time and then click right here in the new closet close the layer so we can see a little bit better there it is d4 but we need to mirror it so we will select it one time and we'll type in the mirror command enter now how do we do the mirror line it's in between right in the center and we don't really have a point there well there's a little trick in AutoCAD you can do m2p which is the midpoint between two points so type that in click enter and now we want first point so I'll click on the corner of the left wall second point corner of the right wall and then I have to move my mouse or cursor straight down because it could go the other way we want to make sure I go straight down and then it will mirror it across so I'll click one time erase the source objects let's go ahead and say yes and enter and there it is we place that door being a little tricky with that m2p command all right now this other door here it's going to be on a different type of door so we're going to go back to our residential blocks and the door we want let's see if we can find it's this one door int 24 × 80 it's a 24 inch door so we'll select it we can right click and select copy under the clipboard area copy and let's just try another cool thing we can do we can copy with base point let's try that copy with base point and we'll click the hinge point of this door click the hinge point there we go and it's copied now I'm going to close my properties and go back to my plan here and I will right click and I will select clipboard and paste and there it is you can see it's right on the hinge point of my mouse perfect so now I can see where this door goes it's kind of well we see exactly two foot eleven from the side wall so we're not sure exactly where that is right now so let's go ahead and place it right at this corner so I will click actually let's do the farthest corner here click one time click there it is so it's right at that corner now let's select it again and type mirror m-i-r-r-o-r enter we'll click at that corner and go to the right and click again do we want to erase the source objects let's do y for yes and enter so there it is it's kind of facing the correct direction now let's get it to the correct layer so I'll select it and type in properties and what layer is it set to right now it's layer zero so I will change that to door new a-door-new okay now let's be a little tricky we could find that dimension by creating some lines but let's go ahead and just move it into place so I have it selected I'll do m for move I'll grab the center or the end point of the door swing so right there it'll say intersection I'll click I'll move that to this wall corner right there that's not where I want to hit but I do know that from that corner to the center of the door I have a dimension it's three foot six so now all I have to do is select it m for move and I can click right on the end of that door swing move my cursor to the right and type in the dimension three foot six inches enter and now I know it's in the correct place all I need to do now is mirror it across because there are two of these doors so I'll select it type in mirror m-i-r-r-o-r enter I'll click right at that swing point click move my cursor straight up with ortho turned on click again and I don't want to erase my source objects so I'll accept no and we're good to go looks good right let's go ahead and clean up our lines I believe our current layer is still set to the new walls so we can just type in line right where we are and we'll add this line here and another line right here perfect now tr for trim I'll trim out this extra little bit of wall I'll trim out some of this extra wall here and it can be hard to use a trim command because you have a block on top of the wall a couple things you can do one is to select one of these doors and type in the command draw order d-r-a-w order enter and send it to back and that has you can see mild success it didn't quite do it so what I like to do is simply click on that line and there's a blue dot I can click and drag it back into place do the same thing here drag it into place if that doesn't work for you can also click that line delete it and just redraw it line this is a pretty easy line to draw it's from this point to this point no dimensions just click enter and you're done all right so that does it right we've got our doors throughout both of our levels
