Discover the process of adding and modifying a window in AutoCAD, including measuring, selecting the correct block, and placing the window. Learn how to accurately measure window openings, select the appropriate block from the residential blocks, and rotate and place the window in the model space.
Key Insights
- The process starts with measuring the window opening in AutoCAD model tab using the distance measuring command. The dimension is 2 foot 8 inches, which translates to 32 inches overall.
- The next step involves going back to the residential blocks to look for the window of suitable dimensions, selecting it, and copying it to the model space. The window is then rotated and placed using the rotate command.
- The final step is to set the window to the correct layer by changing the layer in the properties window. Here, the layer is set to glaze wind for windows, which turns the window into a cyan color.

Now let's add in the new window in the powder room. It's located right here and right here in AutoCAD. Let's first measure this window opening.
So in AutoCAD in the model tab, we'll do DI for distance measuring, and we'll click on one side of the window, click on the other side, and we'll notice that the dimension is 2 foot 8 inches, which translates to 32 inches overall. Let's go back to our blocks, our residential blocks, and we'll look for windows up in the top right, and we're looking for that 32 inch by 48 inch window. We'll select it, and we'll do CTRL C on our keyboard, go back over to our model space and CTRL V to paste.
There it is, and I'm going to click once right here in this corner, click. Now I'll select it, I'll use the rotate command to rotate it into place, R-O for rotate, and enter. I'll click on that corner one time, move my cursor straight up, and click, and it's placed, just like that.
Now let's put it onto the correct layer. So let's select it and type in properties, and in our properties window, we want to change the layer. It's currently set to layer zero.
Let's drop that down, and we're looking for a glazing, and we want a glaze wind for windows. So select that, and it should turn a nice cyan color, and with that, we're all set. We've placed our new window.
