Delve into the world of transportation design with Civil 3D 202 where learners will explore everything from alignments to cross-section cutting. This immersive course aims to provide realistic scenarios that mimic real-world design ideals, preparing students for the practical challenges they may face in their field.
Key Insights
- The course focuses on various aspects of transportation design, starting with the concept of alignments and progressing into profiles and assemblies. These are used to build corridors, which are then dissected to create section views for corridor designs.
- One of the key learning outcomes is the ability to design and construct roads keeping in mind potential development areas. This includes leaving space at the top of slopes for homes to be built, working with the edges of data, and dealing with limited data in certain scenarios.
- Real-world design ideals are heavily emphasized in the course, providing students with a practical understanding of the day-to-day challenges faced in the field. This includes dealing with constraints such as time, budgets, and limited survey data.

Hi, welcome to Civil 3D 202. In this course, we're going to cover a variety of topics, but most of the topics will be pertaining to transportation design ideas. In this class, we're going to start talking about alignments.
And this file that you're looking at here is kind of what we're going to end up with when we're done with this whole class. We're going to start by talking about alignments that are being used underneath these corridors here. Then we'll move on to discussing profiles.
And then from there, we'll move on to discussing assemblies that are used to build the corridors that are over here. And then from there, we're going to discuss cutting cross-sections through these corridors to create section views for those corridor designs. Now, moving on from here, one thing I do want to discuss about how this class is built is that we are trying to use some real-world design ideas when we're dealing with these corridors and alignments that we're building.
So with that being said, sometimes when you have a survey that's given to you for work that you're going to be doing in design, surveyors have certain types of boundaries that they have that they're working with when they give you the data. They have limits of time. They have limits of budget.
And so the scope of a survey is done to give you the best data possible. But as you get closer to the edges of your development area, you're going to run out of some data and you might not have all of the information you need. So inside of this file that we have here, we're building these roadways to get this site that we have here ready for development that we'll cover in a different class.
But the first thing that we have to do is get these roads in here so that we can then start building the site. So what we're going to be doing is we're building these roads in a manner that allows this project to be developed with some very valuable lots. So with that in consideration, these roads that we're going to be designing are leaving some space at the top of some of these slopes for homes to be built.
And we're working with the edges of our data so that we can have that space available for those home sites. Again, the other thing that we're dealing with here is that when our survey crew came out for this project, they used their time wisely in surveying the main heart of the site. But as we get out to the outer edges of where we're tying into this existing roadway, we may end up with limited data.
And so these are things that you have to deal with in day-to-day projects. And so we're going to try and mimic that in our design world that we're using in this Civil 3D 202 course. So once we're done with this video, I'll meet you in the next video, and we'll actually start getting to designing.
