Enhancing Interior Layouts with Viewports and Precision Rug Placement in AutoCAD Paper Space

Rugs can really bring a room together and they can help our furniture plan really come together as well. One quick gut check, we want to make sure that we are indeed drawing inside our viewport. AutoCAD helps us know that we're doing this because it gets a thickened line out here.

And if I double click in my paper space, it goes to thin. And if I were to draw something out here, just type in a rectangle, it will be out here in paper space. You can see it can go beyond that edge.

So I don't want to do that. Just gut check, make sure that we have our viewport selected. We double click, get the thick line.

And now if I draw a rectangle, you'll notice that it can't go outside that boundary. It lets me know I'm actually working inside the viewport. Okay, set up for this.

We want to first go to layer here with our viewport active. And in the layer area, we want to change our active layer to iFern Rug. I'll double click, it says current layer iFern Rug.

We're good to go. Now let's zoom into our first floor living room, room number one here. And we have a rug.

And we'll notice here in our PDF, it says rug eight foot by 10 foot. Let's go ahead and create that. We'll use the rectangle tool, R-E-C-T, for a rectangle.

And we'll just create that somewhere off to the side a little bit. We'll click one time. Oh, and I'm not seeing anything.

I forgot a step. Let's go ahead and hit escape, back to layer. And we want to make sure iFern Rug isn't frozen.

So unfreeze it. So VP freeze. And then we'll close layers again.

And let's try it one more time. R-E-C-T for rectangle. Click and move my cursor away.

And now I notice I have two dimensions. And as I move my cursor around, those dimensions fluctuate. But I want them to be precise.

The first one is eight feet. So I'll type in eight, the foot mark, which is a single quote. And then on my keyboard, I hit TAB.

That jumps to the other dimension. And now I can type in the other dimension, which is 10 feet. I can click tab to go back and forth, or just click enter once I see the full eight by 10.

Enter. And now I need to move it into place. I will select it.

M for move. I'm going to click the right side. There is a midpoint.

I'll click that. And I want to midpoint it with my sofa. So I'll click midpoint of the sofa.

Click one time. And now I'll select it again. And M for move.

I'll grab the midpoint of the top. Go to the right, to my crosshair line, and click. And there it is.

Now it's in place. But you know, I don't love the rug going all the way to the window. So let's go ahead and say we're going to center this again.

We'll select everything in the living room and give it some margin. We're going to click M for move. Click one time.

And let's just move it up. And let's go, let's say one foot. One foot.

Enter. There we go. That looks pretty good.

I'm happy with that. Now we can clean a few things up. Number one, I can delete this center line.

I don't need it anymore as a guide. Delete that. But I can move this living label into a better place.

I'll do M for move. Grab its bottom midpoint and go to the midpoint of the coffee table. That will center it.

And I'll select it again. M for move. And I'll move it up off the table.

We'll go six inches. Okay, that looks really good. But what is wrong? We have the rug line cutting through the couch and our little side chairs.

We don't want to do that. So what we'll do is use a trim command. TR to trim.

TR, enter. And just remove these little extra pieces. And I like to start on the edges of whatever furniture I'm cutting, which right now is kind of the arm rests.

So trim those out and then hit escape. I'm still left with a couple of extra lines. I know that they are the lines and not the block because the block highlights and selects all at once.

But these lines are just lines. We'll select them and simply hit delete on our keyboard. And that looks pretty good, right? We now have our living room set with furniture and a rug.

Pretty cool. So let's go ahead and do the same for the dining room. We'll start the rectangle command again.
