Creating a Detailed Hearth Wall Elevation with Chimney and Cabinetry in AutoCAD Step by Step

Now let's create our hearth wall elevation. In AutoCAD we'll just move over to this elevation that has two windows in it and it has this really unique feature. It has this hearth from this 1880s home.

So let's go to our layer and we'll change our layer to the AWallChimExisting. So AWallChim for existing chimney. We'll double click there and close that down.

Now we'll start our line command L-I-N-E and we'll start right in the middle of our project. If we click right on this bottom midpoint one time, click and go down just an arbitrary amount and we'll click again. Now we'll go to the left and we'll notice that the overall width is two foot eight.

We want to go over half of that distance which is one foot four inches. Enter and then go straight up. This part's important.

We want perpendicular. Click one time and then go up and there are some blue dimensions here in our pdf. We can follow along.

We want to go six feet six feet. Enter. There we go and we'll hit escape for now.

That's that bottom portion. Now we can start from the top. We'll do line L-I-N-E and we're going to go to the midpoint of the ceiling.

Click and go up an arbitrary amount. Click. Go to the left and we have one foot four.

We want half of that which is eight inches. Enter and then down right to perpendicular. Click.

How far down are we going? We're going down two foot four inches. We will type that in. Two foot four inches.

Enter and then just connect from where we are to the top of that six foot line. Click and there it is. We've got half of our chimney there.

Now we can delete out our extra lines. We don't need them. We will select this portion.

Select and we'll mirror it across. We'll type in mirror. M-I-R-R-O-R.

Enter and we'll click right at that midpoint. Click. Go up with ortho turned on or go midpoint to midpoint.

Click. Do we want to erase our source objects? No and there it is. We've got our outline of our chimney.

Now we can use the T-R or trim command to remove our crown molding. It doesn't go through the top of the chimney there. And hit escape.

Now we've got a couple of hearth boxes here to add. We'll use our line command again starting at the bottom. L-I-N-E.

I'm going to click on this floor plane one time. Click. Go up and I want to go up eight inches.

Enter and then go all the way across and click again and escape. Now I have six inch offset on the sides. Let's go ahead and use the offset command.

O-F-F-S-E-T. What is my distance? Six inches. Enter.

And I want to offset these outside lines in six inches. And I'll do both of them. Okay the offset command was fun.

Let's keep using it. My next distance here is two feet. Let's use offset again.

Distance two feet. Enter. Click and go up.

There we go. Click again. That's two feet.

We'll use offset again. And this time the distance is eight inches. Eight inches.

And I want to click and go up eight inches and escape. Now here we have a curved top which is kind of tricky. But we have some clues on how to create that.

First we need to go up two feet. We'll do offset and two feet. Enter.

Grab this line. Go up two feet and click and escape. The top of that arch is four inches.

We'll do another offset and we'll do four inches. Enter. Grab that line.

Go up four inches and click and escape. There it is. Looks pretty good right? But kind of messy.

So do tr for trim. And trim every corner until all these extra lines are gone. So bottom corners of this bottom rectangle.

The corners here and the top corners here. And then we have this kind of extra line which is just there as a guide for the arch. We will trim those away as well.

With that we'll hit escape and delete all these extra lines. We don't need them. And now we'll type in arc.

A-R-C for arc. It wants the start point. We'll click on the left down here at this spacing line.

Click. And it wants the second point of the arc which is the midpoint right at the top. So click there.

And now it wants the third point which is all the way to the right on our spacing line. And click. And there it is.

There's our arch. Now we can delete that spacing line. And we'll delete the top line.

And use trim to trim away these little extra portions. All right. That is looking pretty cool.

Now we need to add in a hatch. We'll change our layer. We'll type in layer.

And we want to go to our APAT LF. We'll double click there. So APAT LF is our current layer.

And we'll type in the hatch command. H-A-T-C-H. And in our patterns we want to pull the little drop down arrows down and scroll down to brick.

Click that. Change our scale to 24. And then click right inside this hearth.

You'll see it before you click. It should show up and give you a preview. And if it looks okay click and accept those results.

Now we'll hit escape. And we've got our hearth. Pretty fun little detail in this project.

Now we need to add in our cabinets. So to make it quick we will go back to our elevation 1. Our door wall. And we will select our profile.

We've already drawn it. We will also select our toe kick line. Our drawer line.

And both of our counter lines. Then CO to copy. And click right in this very corner.

I'm going to zoom in a lot because there's a little diagonal line. I don't want that to mess me up. I want the exact corner.

Click one time. Move my cursor to the right and click right here. And just like that I have my right profile.

Easy peasy. Now I have brought over the scribe line but I don't want it right here. I'm going to use M for move and move it right to the front face of that counter.

So click and click again. There it is. All right and that gives us some little extra lines here.

I'm going to use trim to trim out this guy here. Trim over here. That one.

These guys. And right there. Okay that looks really good.

It's letting me know there's like a little remnant left over there. So that's okay. Hit escape.

I am good to go. Okay now I need my base cabinets and they're 18 inches. I'm going to grab this line.

Select it. Copy it. Click and go to the left.

18 inches. And if I'm good at math I can type in 36 inches. Enter.

Sometimes that's tricky. So you can hit escape again and select copy and 18 inches. Okay base cabinet.

Super quick. And then tr to trim. We don't need this extra line.

This is just again a spacer that goes against the brick because the brick's going to be wavy. We want to leave a little space for there. And that's it.

See how quickly we did that one. We have our base cabinets and those look good. We'll hit escape and now we need to add in our little diagonal lines.

We'll type in layer again and those are a case swing. So a case swing. Double click.

That's our current layer. And we'll draw our line. L-I-N-E.

And here we go. We'll start with this left one here. Click.

And we have to use our M2P command again. Enter. I'll click on the top line.

Bottom line. And it finds it. And then back to that line where we started and hit escape.

Now we'll move a little quicker. We've drawn one. We'll select it.

We'll do C-O to copy. Grab that left. Actually we don't want to copy.

We need a mirror first. Let's select it again. Mirror.

M-I-R-R-O-R. Enter. And let's click at the top and bottom.

And enter. And now we can copy. We'll grab this.

C-O to copy. Right there to right and escape. And that's all one side.

The cool thing is the left side is the same. It's symmetrical. I'll select everything.

Type in mirror. Find this midpoint. Click.

Go straight down. Enter. And just like that we have completed the hearth wall elevation.
