Refining Interior Spaces with Materials in Twinmotion and Revit for Realistic Visual Appeal

Welcome back to lesson four of video number two. When working on interiors, you know, one of the first things we wanted to do was explore the material library. And so let's jump into that right now.

And let's start thinking about what we want to replace. There are a lot of areas here that came in as generic that we don't want to replace. It doesn't matter what you start with, but let's just start with something.

So let's start with this wall right here. I can see if I click my eyedrop tool that I can see that this is called gypsum wallboard. This right here is gypsum wallboard.

This wall material here is gypsum wallboard. The ceiling is metal paint finish. And this right here is finishes paint white.

So there's many different materials. The baseboard is default wall. And the edge right here is metal paint finish gray.

So there's many different materials on here. So when we apply a material, it would only replace whatever material is the same across. So the main way of replacing a material is you go into your categories here and you find in the category of the material that you want to replace.

For this one, we'll click wall coverings. And we can scroll and hover over to see what each of these look like. Some of these are exterior plaster coating and some of these are more exterior.

Some of these are more just generic wall setting stuff like that. And some of these even like more plaster coating. Let's say I want this really rich textured wall for this interior.

I can use the standard ones here. Or I can go into mega scans and I can look at a category for wall. I can look at plaster for fresh plaster paint wall for stucco.

Or I can even look into more paint type stuff. For this case, let's just use the standard materials library within Twinmotion and go to wall coverings. And let's use this plaster coating and drag that onto this wall surface.

As you can see here, it applied to the faces, but not on the edges. Let's use our eyedropper tool and see what material that is. That is default wall.

So that is actually the same material as the baseboard. We actually want that to be the same material as this. So let's go back into Revit that we currently still have open.

And let's actually let's go inside. We want to we want to add paint to this little surface right here. And we want that to be the same material as this, which is believe it was called gypsum.

Let's double check that by using our tab key to click this wall. And then we can look at the structure. And this is gypsum wall B. We want to make sure we want to paint that this wall right here is gypsum wall B. We can go into paint and we can go find that gypsum wall bore, where that was the B, and we can drag we can click this and we can find this surface by clicking tab and paint that.

All right. Now if we were to go back into our Revit model and go to Twinmotion and synchronize, it would update that within Twinmotion. And you can see that it already changed that.

Likewise, there's another wall material here that we would want to paint that as well. So there's a couple things of modifying materials of when you go back and forth,  as you kind of make sure that everything looks the way that you want. So that's the beautiful thing about a direct link is you can do a really quick change, synchronize, and then you can go right back into Twinmotion and you're good to go.

The other thing to note with this is the scale and maybe reflectivity, all that is very standardized. It has not been set up. We want to increase the scale.

And if we go over to the right, you can see here under UV that there is this scale slider. So a two would be double the size of the scale. We want to kind of get an interesting size shape that looks pretty good for this textured wall material.

You know,  as you start looking at this, you might realize, oh, I don't know if I like this material. And that's when you can just drag and drop another material, say such as this rough cut class coding. We can put that there.

We can increase the scale. We can see what that looks like. Like, oh, I don't know about that.

Actually, let's go into this matte painted wall, just a generic wall. And then we can increase the scale of this to see if there is any sort of texture to it. And there isn't.

It's like, you know what? I'm not really sure about this material. And I feel like this might be the wall material that I want,  just something like that. So there's a little bit of texture.

You can't really see it unless you're kind of far away. It's a little bit more on the shinier side. You can actually decrease the shininess by bringing up your intensity.

So all the way down will be reflective,  and then all the way up would be just more flat. You can kind of see the reflectivity over here of kind of what's happening between that. We're kind of going in between.

We don't want that to be super reflective. And as we go up to here, you know, we want to go do maybe a satin painted wall for the ceiling here. And maybe we want to do another satin painted wall for this.

But maybe we want to make this a little more reflective and shiny for that kind of glossy paint. And let's say we want to have that same material be applied to here. So I can drag that same, this one down here, or I could use my eyedropper tool, select this so that it shows up inside the painted wall, and then drag this object onto this surface to apply that material.

We want to replace every instance of a material in the entire model. For example,  we want to change all the wood flooring. We want to change all the countertops, all that stuff,  right? And then after we make replacements, a lot of times you want to check to see what it looks like.

So what we will do is once we sort of set up our environmental settings, we may have to go back and readjust some of these wall materials as they may look a little bit better kind of over time. So again, let's just go do a few more different materials in this video. Let's go replace the wood floor next.

We want to go look at some of the standard wood flooring within the materials, go to materials, wood, you can look at some of these kind of planks, you know, this,  this might seem like a good one right here, we can drag that onto it. And I can look to see like,  the scale is really small, let's drag that up and increase, increase the scale that I dragged the luminosity increase the scale to get to the size that we want, you know,  we can be very specific about this, or just kind of generally kind of look at that. So okay,  that's kind of a nice material, you know, that looks good.

Are there better options? Let's go look under library, we can go into mega scans. We can look under surfaces. And then here we can look under wood, and there's board, parquet, plank, veneer, look at board, this is more of kind of our plywood board type stuff.

So this wouldn't be like board flooring. If we go into parquet, this is going to be more of your wooden floor type things,  laying these things down in different layouts. They go into plank, this is more of your wooden plank exterior things, but they do have a decent amount of wood flooring as well.

So a lot of times what I would do is I'll go into wood, I don't actually type in floor within this. We can see all the different types of wood flooring that could be used, right? We'll have to download these. So what you need to do is need to be signed into Epic Games, we just click that, it should automatically sign in.

And here's where you want to download. The thing with these mega scans is you cannot hover over it to see what it's going to look like. So you really have to do a lot of trial and error.

Let's say we want to do this English bond oak parquet. And we'll click that, we'll download, we'll drag it onto this, and then it'll actually show up. So then we can see like, okay, that's kind of a nice material, I want to increase the scale of this.

But you know, now we're getting to a lot more higher quality wood with a bit more variation and uniqueness. So that was I think that was a good call in modifying that material. The next thing that we want to look at is some of these other materials within the space, right? There are the doors, we want these to be wooden doors, but we don't like this standard material.

So again, we can go back into wood. And if we go to veneer, this is more of our kind of solid types of veneer, want to get a nice clean oak wood veneer, drag that on the door. And then we can, you know, increase the scale.

And we can see like, ooh, that is way too much grain. Let's find something that has a little bit more simpler. You know, we're, we're kind of more or less jumping around and experimenting with what we think.

We'll try the ash, we'll see what that looks like. Again, this is the scale comes in small. And again, we see there's a lot of variation in grain.

Maybe birch might be a little bit better. If we start going through this, we say, I don't think this is the right one. We can actually go back into our, our standard Twinmotion materials.

And we can see what that looks like. But I'm this ash veneer might be the best. There you go.

That's a very simple kind of wood,  you know, you can bring it up, you can show what that looks like. We can adjust the color by clicking on this little tint button here. You can move this little slider around to adjust the color, it might be a little more like warmer, kind of around in like this kind of range,  something like that.

We can adjust the darkness, the brightness, the luminosity of it to kind of get to the color that we want. Ultimately, we want that to somewhat match our flooring. So we can also go back, use our eyedropper tool, and click on our flooring and, you know,  increase the saturation by dragging out, increase the saturation per each of these colors.

So a little bit, a little bit in the kind of yellow orange range, right around kind of there to kind of get a nice kind of warm wood flooring. If we want that flooring to be reflective,  go down into this roughness. And as we drag down, you can see that we have very reflective flooring in some ways.

So kind of in this nice range here of flooring. Because we're going to be swapping out these furniture, we don't need to apply textures to those yet. However, there are certain furniture that I do like that I'm probably going to keep such as this television, I might replace the television.

This credenza is a decent piece of furniture from Revit, I'll probably keep that,  modify the materials. And then, you know, we want to go into the kitchen and start modifying materials in the kitchen. As you are laying this out, you may notice that there are certain things happening, like why is there light happening over here, right? Is that coming in from the exterior? Those are things that we want to think about, like, okay, maybe because there's, there's the flooring, and there's the sky.

So certain things like that, you may want to adjust, say like I,  okay, I'm concerned about this. So I'll go into my Revit model. And what I can actually do pretty quickly is I can actually extend my section box out further that way to encapsulate more of that room next door, and then synchronize.

And if I was to go back into Twinmotion,  you can see that that's gone now, because I have some of this stuff. So there's things like that,  that you may see that needs to be adjusted. And you can only do that as you move along the process.

So having Revit open at the same time of your Twinmotion is really great. All right, so we're going to stop here. I want you to work on your own and apply wall textures, and flooring textures.

In the next video, we are going to do more detailed materials for the kitchen,  including the countertops, some of the metal for the refrigerator. We might even replace some of the assets for the kitchen, like if we need to get a new range or something like that. That will be an option that we will explore in the next video.

We kind of want to work our way around the building, the space, as we start moving things,  get closer and closer and closer to the end result. Make sure you're constantly saving,  so I will do CTRL S to save my file. Make sure you're saving as you go.
