What are the system requirements for Smartsheet?
Since Smartsheet is a 100% cloud-based (Software as a Service) application, you don't install it on your computer the way you would a desktop program—you access it through a web browser. This means performance depends less on your processor or graphics card and more on a stable internet connection and an up-to-date, supported browser. Smartsheet works on PC, Mac, Linux, and ChromeOS, as well as on mobile devices. Below are the system requirements for Smartsheet. If you are using Smartsheet as part of a construction management course at VDCI, our staff can help you confirm that your browser and setup are ready to load the software. Keep in mind that these can change as Smartsheet and web browsers are updated, so it is a good idea to check Smartsheet's website for the most up-to-date system requirements.
For professionals in construction management, project scheduling, and operations, meeting these system requirements is crucial to ensure smooth and efficient sheet, dashboard, and automation workflows. Because Smartsheet runs in the browser, keeping your browser current is the single most important step you can take to enhance performance, security, and access to the latest features. As cloud-based work management tools continue to evolve, staying informed about supported browsers and sheet-size limits will ensure that your setup remains compatible and responsive. This is particularly important for those working with large sheets, connectors, and reports that demand reliable performance. Regularly reviewing the requirements on Smartsheet's website will help you maintain optimal performance, ensuring you can tackle even the most demanding work management projects with confidence.
Operating systems and browsers
Software Requirements
An internet connection to access Smartsheet from any browser.
JavaScript must be enabled in your browser.
Smartsheet supports the two most recent major versions of each supported browser, and performance and security are enhanced when you use the latest generally available version. Developer or pre-release browser versions are not officially supported.
Supported Browsers by Operating System
Windows: Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.
Mac: Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.
Linux: Firefox.
ChromeOS: Chrome.
Recommended Browsers
Smartsheet works best on Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
If you are working with sheets that have more than 5,000 rows, use either Chrome or Microsoft Edge for the best performance.
Sheet and imported file size maximums
A single sheet cannot exceed 500,000 cells—when you multiply the number of rows by the number of columns, the total must stay under this limit. Imported files have the same restrictions and cannot exceed 50 MB.
Rows: 20,000 maximum.
Columns: 400 maximum.
Cells: 500,000 maximum.
Characters in a cell: 4,000 maximum.
Inbound and outbound cell links or references: 500,000 maximum.
To estimate how close you are to the cell limit, multiply your columns by your rows—for example, a sheet with 400 columns can have up to 1,250 rows.
Mobile app
Smartsheet is also available as a mobile app for phones and tablets, so you can view and update your work on the go.
If you are enrolling at VDCI, the browser-based version on a computer is recommended for coursework, with the mobile app as a convenient companion for quick updates away from your desk.
