Placing and Adjusting Bathroom and Kitchen Fixtures Using Dynamic Blocks in AutoCAD Floor Plans

Learn how to insert, rotate, and dynamically adjust bathroom and kitchen fixtures using AutoCAD blocks and layer management techniques.

This article offers a step-by-step guide on how to incorporate fixtures into a building plan using AutoCAD. It details the process of adding bathroom fixtures, enabling stretch commands, establishing a dynamic block, and positioning fixtures according to specific measurements.

Key Insights

  • The article provides a comprehensive guide to adding fixtures to a building plan in AutoCAD, beginning with bathroom fixtures. This includes details on how to load the library for plan blocks and bring in blocks for specific rooms.
  • The tutorial introduces the concept of a dynamic block, which includes parameters that allow for dynamic changes to how the block looks in the drawing, enhancing the flexibility and power of AutoCAD design.
  • Specific measurements are used for the accurate placement of fixtures. For instance, the countertop is positioned 1 foot 10 inches from the wall, and sinks are placed 1 foot 4 inches from the adjacent walls.

In this video we are now ready to bring in our fixtures. You'll notice that we are on the A fixtures layer and we can begin to bring in our fixtures for our bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, our storage room, laundry room, and so on.

In this case we're going to start with some of the bathroom fixtures but there's no real order that you need to go in unless it's specified by your owner or one of your managers at work. So for now I'll go I enter to open up our blocks dialog box. You'll see in our current drawing we have some temporary blocks that have been created because of our copy with base point clipboard and we have the keynote block coming in because it's part of one of our multi-leader styles.

I want to go to libraries for now and I want to load the library for our plan blocks. I'll hit load and go to where we've saved our CAD301 file downloads. I've saved mine on my C drive.

I'll go to blocks and plan blocks and I'll hit open. Now we can bring in the blocks for our bathrooms. Let's zoom in here on this bathroom first.

We're going to bring in the bathtub and we'll place the bathtub in the bottom corner here. Now this block is actually kind of a teaser. It is a dynamic block which includes parameters that allow us to dynamically change how the block looks in this drawing.

Now while we won't be creating any dynamic blocks in this course I highly suggest you check them out to see how powerful AutoCAD really can be. If we select the tub we can see that there is a base point grip but also there is a grip up here that represents a stretch command. If we click that grip to make it hot and then select the end point of the wall here you can see that the tub has dynamically stretched to fill the space.

We'll do the same dynamic stretching for the rest of the tubs on our floor plan but for now let's finish this bathroom. I'm going to go down to my toilet, select the toilet, and this will go in at the shift right click mid between two points on the end point of the tub and the end point of this wall. Perfect.

Finally let's add in our counter over here. I'm going to make an offset, o enter for offset. By the way let's change our layer settings back.

L enter for layer and we want to do source s enter. Now we can work on the counter. The countertop is going to be 1 feet 10 inches from the wall.

1 feet 10 enter. We'll select this edge and go to the left and click enter to say I'm done. Now we need to this wall line to the A counter layer.

So I've selected the line and migrated it and I'll hit escape. Now these two sinks are going to come in and check your A202 handout to see the exact dimensions. We can see that these sinks are both 1 foot 4 from these walls here and here.

Let's go offset enter 1 foot 4 enter. We're going to bring a construction line up here and a construction line down here. Enter to say that we're done.

Now let's go to the sink bath over in our blocks dialog box. We want to change our rotation to go to the left. This is a positive rotation of 90 degrees and we want to check repeat placement.

Now we can click our sink bath icon and click to place one here and one here. Hit escape, escape, escape when you're done and I'll pick both of my construction lines and delete them out. Let's go control s to save and let's move on to our next bathroom.

Up here we'll start with our tub. So I'll go up and find the bathtub. This one's going to come in at a rotation of 90 because we just had that set but we actually want this rotated 270.

So let's change this angle to 270 and let's uncheck repeat placement. I'll hit bathtub and I'll place it in this corner. Click the block to make it hot.

Click the grip to make it hot and select the end point of the wall. There we go. The angle is 270 and that's the same angle we want for our toilet.

So I'll click the toilet, shift right click mid between two points of the tub and the wall. Finally let's put in our countertop here. This is another double sink countertop.

Let's go offset o enter a distance of 1 foot 10 enter. That's for the countertop itself. Let's migrate that layer to the a counter.

We've migrated the object to the a counter layer. Now you'll notice on a202 we do not have a detailed plan for this bathroom. That's okay.

We'll use 1 foot 4 again for the sink distance. Let's go offset 1 foot 4 enter. Bring this line up and this line down and let's grab the sink again with a rotation angle of 270.

Let's place one here and I'll hit the sink again and place one here. Remember to erase your construction geometry. Okay now let's go down to our final bathroom.

This tub needs to have a rotation of 180 so I'll show the tub. Type in 180 and click and click to place in the corner. Let's grab the tub and stretch it down.

This toilet is actually on the other side so the rotation is 0. Let's bring in the toilet. Shift right click mid between two points here and here and let's do our offset of 1 foot 10 for this countertop. Migrate that geometry to the a counter layer.
