Label commercial drawings to ensure accurate furniture placement and purchasing. This article breaks down the steps required to label each furniture item using professional software tools, making the process easier and more efficient.
Key Insights
- When labeling furniture in a commercial drawing set, each item is referred to a furniture schedule which contains the information needed for ordering. This ensures accuracy and consistency in the purchasing of furniture items.
- Labeling involves copying an existing label and then adjusting its position to center it on the furniture item. This is done using keyboard commands and tools available in the drawing software.
- Rotation and mirroring functionalities are used to maintain professionalism and readability of labels. Once a label is placed correctly, it can be mirrored to other similar items in the layout to quickly complete the labeling process.

A professional commercial drawing set has labels on each furniture piece. These labels refer to a schedule, a furniture schedule, and that schedule has all the information we need to order furniture. So let's go ahead and label all of this furniture that we just placed.
To do that let's copy a label because we already have one. If we go to the break room we see all of these furniture labels. Let's grab the FO5, the horizontal FO5, and type in CO to copy, then enter.
Then grab the midpoint at the base of that label and then come down to the midpoint of our executive desk and click one time. Then hit escape. It's now centered on the desk right and left.
Now let's center it up and down. To do that we'll select it and type in M for move. Let's first make sure that we have our show snapping reference lines on.
They should be on by default but if it's not we can click F12 on our keyboard or click down here and turn them on. What that does is it provides guidelines. So on the right side of this label I will click the midpoint, click, and then just move my cursor to the right and hover over the right midpoint.
Then I bring my cursor back and it knows I want to snap to that point and I get this green dashed line that guides me there. I click and there it is perfectly centered. Now I need to give it the correct label.
I will double click and it's currently set to FO5 but this desk in our schedule is actually F10. So change it to F10 and click OK. Let's do that again.
Let's copy this. We'll grab the bottom midpoint and go to this junior desk. Click, hit escape, M for move, do the right midpoint, hover over the right midpoint of the desk so it lines up, click, double click on that label, and let's change this one to F11 and click OK.
All right, now let's copy this over. We have more desks here. Select it, CO to copy, grab that mid base point, find the midpoint right here in the cubicle, click, hit escape, select it, M for move, grab that midpoint, hover over the midpoint here and back again, click, and this one we're going to change it to F12 and click OK.
We only need to do one because we can mirror that around later. Let's go back to our chairs. Let's copy the F10.
Select it, CO to copy, click and drag it off to the left. Click again, hit escape. We want to select it and RO to rotate.
Click the top right corner and with ortho turned on you can rotate it. I like to rotate it down. Why is that? That way it's read from top to bottom, just like a book on the bookshelf.
It's a very professional way to have all of our vertical text run. Click again and it's rotated. Now select it, M for move, grab that bottom midpoint and click on the midpoint of this chair, click, select it.
Let's give it a little bit of breathing room, M for move, and let's move it up just one inch and let's double click and change its label. It's currently F10 but we want it to be F02 and click OK. Now we'll select it, CO to copy, we'll click the midpoint front of this chair, the midpoint front of this chair, and in our junior office.
Click and escape. That looks good. Now let's copy one of our F02s, CO to copy.
We will grab its top midpoint this time and go to the top midpoint of this executive chair. Hit escape, select it, move it down to give it that breathing room. Let's go down like one and a half inches because this chair is a little bigger, 1.5, and let's double click and this chair here is F03, F03 and OK.
Now we have another one so we'll select it, CO to copy, grab the midpoint of that chair and the same midpoint on the other chair and there it is. Our office furniture is all labeled there. Now we need to label one more item in our cubicles and that's this chair.
We'll grab our F12, CO to copy, grab the right midpoint, grab the midpoint of this chair, hit escape, move it to the left one inches to give us our breathing room one inch, and we'll double click. What is this chair? It's the same one found as the guest chair here and it's just F02 and we'll click OK. Now that we have one cubicle done we'll select these two.
We will type in mirror and we'll grab the center point between the cubicles, go straight up and click again and enter. Now we have all of those done. Now we'll select all four and mirror, grab this midpoint horizontally between the cubicles, click and click to the right, enter, and just like that all of our office furniture is labeled.
