Learn about creating detailed borders through a step-by-step process involving saving files, moving and aligning elements, and adding text. This tutorial guides you through the process of creating 1x1, 1x2, 2x1, and 2x2 details in a drawing file.
Key Insights
- The process begins with saving the current file and then using the 'Save As' feature to select the desired detail border format.
- The tutorial includes instructions on how to reference attach other detail formats, move the 'xref', copy with base point, and insert text at specific nodes to align with the design.
- Once the details are created, the tutorial provides guidance on how you can start numbering the details once they have been placed in the drawing.

Let's begin creating our two horizontal, two vertical detail border. So again, I'm just going to click File, Save, and then File, Save As. And I will slide down and choose my detail border, two horizontal, two vertical, and overwrite the file.
What I'm going to do first is I'm going to attach the one horizontal, two vertical as a reference. Specify on-screen, and then just place it over there.
I'm going to move the xref from the end of here over to here. Stretch crossing from the end of the top to the end over there. Escape, Control-S to save.
So I know I have it vertically correct, but I'm going to erase window all of my nodes over there and over here. So I'm going to save the file. Because what I can now do is I can go Control-O to open.
I can go into my one horizontal, two vertical. And I can say Copy with Base Point. So Edit, Copy with Base Point, the end of the interior rectangle, and a window I put around here.
And now I can close the drawing, discard the changes. I haven't made any changes. I can go Control-V and pop them in at the end right there.
Press Escape, then use Copy Window. I can save from the node of any of them perpendicular to the inside line. Hit Escape.
I can type in xr, select the one horizontal, two vertical, right button, detach it out of the drawing, come back into the screen, hit Escape, Zoom Extents, Zoom Realtime, RE for Regen. Now our graphic would be positioned here in the middle. We'd have text on the left and text on the right.
As I zoom in, type RE for Regen, and we have the nodes that we can start using when we put in mText.
So for example, I can go to the Home tab, and then select Text. I can start from the node here and move to the top node. I'm just going to say nearest to here.
And then I have my text. I need to make the text an eighth of an inch high. So I choose that.
And I can say, hello, how are you? Close the Text Editor. And so now I have the text that does align with the nodes. So Zoom Extents and Save the File.
We've now created the detail borders that we need for a 1 × 1, a 1 × 2, a 2 × 1, and a 2 × 2. And when we come back, we're going to go on and start talking about how we number details once they start getting placed in the drawing. See you soon.
