This article offers a thorough guide on how to create door openings in a 2D model. It provides detailed instructions on using offset and trim commands, and discusses the importance of maintaining clean construction geometry throughout the process.
Key Insights
- The article provides clear instructions on creating door openings by using the offset command to create the total width of the door, followed by using the trim command to remove unnecessary lines.
- It emphasizes the importance of maintaining clean construction geometry throughout the process. This ensures that the model remains clear and professional for anyone who may need to view it, whether it's a colleague or a client.
- The article also illustrates how to work on different types of doors, such as exterior doors, garage doors, and front doors, carefully explaining the process with the specific measurements and requirements for each type.

In this video, we will work on our door openings. To begin, let's switch our current layer to A-Wall, and we want to begin with our exterior doors and work our way in.
Now the nice part about the doors in this project is there is that 3-inch jam typical. So for a lot of our doors, all we need to know is the total width of the door and using a 3-inch typical jam. Now, in this case, we have some extra construction geometry just floating around in our model.
Like we did earlier, we want to take care of that geometry first before we move on to any other parts of the drawing. So that if someone takes a look at our model, either while we're on break or overnight, or if a client requests a check set right away, we want to make sure that that geometry is clear and clean when we submit. So let's zoom in on this door and take care of it first.
Now, again, we talked about how this might be represented with middle dimensions and then a total width of a door like we had in these three objects. And we know that this door's total width is 2' 6", wide. So I'm going to go Offset, O, Enter, 1' 3", that's half of 2' 6", Enter.
I'll go once to the left and once to the right, Enter to say I'm done. Now we can delete out this middle line and go Trim, T, R, Enter, 1,2, 3,4, and 5,6. There we go. Now we've created the door opening for that location.
Let's continue going around the outside of the building in a clockwise direction and add the rest of our door openings. All right, so over here we have a 2' 6 door using our 3-inch jam typical. O, Enter for Offset, 3, Enter.
I'll use this line to the right, Enter to say I'm done, Enter to go back in, 2' 6", Enter. I'll go over here, Enter. I'm going to go T, R, Enter for Trim.
Holding Shift, I'll extend here and here, and then I'll trim out 1,2, 3, and 4. Enter to say that I'm done. There aren't any other doors on this vertical wall, so we can continue working around the model. Here we have our door for our garage.
This goes down into the garage. It's a 3-inch jam typical, and this door is slightly larger. It's actually a 2' 8-inch door.
So I'll go O, Enter for Offset, 3", Enter. From this line to the left and click, Enter to say I'm done, Enter to go back in, 2' 8", Enter, 2' 8". I'll grab this line and go to the left, click, Enter to say I'm done.
Same exact strategy. T, R, Enter for Trim. Holding Shift to extend, Extend.
Releasing Shift and Trim, Trim, Trim, Trim. Enter to say that I'm done. All right, let's go down to the front of our garage doors.
And these are doors. They're just drawn a little differently, but they're still door openings. So let's create these door openings.
They're both going to be 2' 4", from the corners of the building. And then each garage door opening is 8' wide. So let's do this together on both the left and right side.
O, Enter for Offset, 2' 4", Enter. From this side in and from this side in. Enter to say I'm done.
Enter to go back in, 8', Enter. From the left side in and from the right side in. Enter to say I'm done.
Now we want to make sure, yep, take a look at this. We see that we have some intersecting geometry up above. So let's be safe and use Trimming Edges.
T, R, Enter for Trim. T, Enter for Cutting Edges. It's going to be all the edges along the bottom here.
Enter to say I'm done. With Fence, remember we can click into space on this side. Use that fence line to come across.
And then I can trim out the door openings. Enter to say that I'm done. Let's do a Zoom Extents, CTRL S to save.
And then let's zoom in and do the front door. The front door here is represented by a door swing on the left and a closed door on the right. This is actually the front door of my house right now.
There's two doors, but we never seem to open one of the sides. That's what this block represents. In any case, it's a six feet wide total door opening.
And the offset from the garage wall is three feet exactly. So I'll zoom out a little bit. Offset, Enter.
Three feet, Enter. I'll go here to here. And because three feet twice is six, I'll go here to here and here to here.
Enter to say that I'm done. Now I'll pick that middle line and hit Delete. That's just a fast way to get to the total width of six feet without having to create two offsets.
I'll go Tr, Enter for Trim. Hold Shift to Extend, Extend. Release Shift and Trim, Trim, Trim and Trim.
Enter to say that I'm done. Okay, there's only one more exterior door as we track all the way around the rest of the perimeter. It's going to be up here in this closet, the storage closet.
And this could be for garden tools or patio furniture. It might also be a mechanical room. If we zoom in, we see that from the bottom side here, it's a slightly easier offset to read.
It's two feet, four inches. So I'll go Offset, Enter. Two feet, four, Enter.
From this edge up and click. Enter to say I'm done. Enter to go back in.
Five feet, Enter. From this line up and click. Enter to say I'm done.
Let's go Tr, Enter for Trim. Holding Shift to extend and releasing Shift to use Trim. Enter to say that I'm done.
Let's go Zoom Extents, Control-S to save. Now we're going to continue with our interior door openings and then we'll come back through the entire model and draw our doors. I'll see you in the next video.
