This article provides a comprehensive guide on creating zoning plans in the BIM 322 course, specifically for construction documents and mechanical drawings. The tutorial includes steps on how to tag and organize the ducts and air terminals, how to create a sheet view, how to duplicate views with detailing, and how to rename the duplicate copies for clarity.
Key Insights
- The article first discusses how to properly tag and organize ducts and air terminals in a floor mechanical plan. Specific steps include double-checking all tagged components and ensuring everything is organized accordingly.
- The tutorial then guides on how to create zoning plans by duplicating the first floor mechanical plan with detailing, renaming the copy to 'HVAC zoning plan', and creating zones in the analyze tab. The author emphasizes the importance of adding spaces to zones and renaming for clarity.
- The article finally suggests creating annotative elements to define zones, using detail lines and hidden lines. The readers are instructed on how to draw detail lines diagonally across the space, add spaces to zones, and finish editing zones with annotative elements.
Welcome back to the CAD Teacher VDCI video course content for the BIM 322 course. What I want to go ahead and do is that we've gone ahead and actually finished tagging and organizing our tags. Please make sure you've just double-checked to make sure you've got all the ducts that you want tagged and all the air terminals tagged.
And let's also go ahead and then make sure that everything is organized correctly. Awesome. So, let's continue on.
So, another type of plan that we need specifically when talking about construction documents and moving into the mechanical drawings is you want to go ahead and create zoning plans. So, what I'm going to go ahead and do is I'm going to go ahead and jump into this first floor Mechanical plan. Again, we're going to be working under the floor plans, not the ceiling plan.
I'm going to go ahead and jump into this first floor Mechanical plan and double-click here. Now, again, this is my working view. Even though we're not going to be modeling anything, I still kind of want to keep a working view there.
So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to go over here and I'm going to create a sheet view. So, under this first floor Mechanical, I'm going to do a right-click. I'm going to go Duplicate View.
And again, I'm going to do Duplicate with Detailing so that I get those room tags to come over with it. So, I'm going to go Duplicate with Detailing. And it's created that Copy of Mech.
Before I rename this, let's just go ahead and make a copy of the second floor Mechanical because I know I'm going to need one. I do not have to be active in that view to duplicate it. So, I can just select it and highlight it like so.
Do a right-click. Duplicate View. Duplicate with Detailing.
And there it is. I want to go ahead and rename these. So, I'm going to select.
I'm going to do a right-click. Do a Rename. I'm going to change this, the copy of, to HVAC Zoning Plan.
And hit OK. I'm going to rename Copy of 2-Mech to rename. And I'm going to rename it to HVAC Zoning Plan 2-Mech.
There we go. Oops. There we go.
I'm going to go ahead and hit OK. So, we've got both those plans. Currently, we are still in that second zoning plan for the second level.
So, let's go ahead and jump back down to the first level. And so, what we have going on now is we have to create the actual zones themselves. So, zoning is underneath in the Analyze tab.
So, I'm going to go ahead and click on Analyze tab up here. And what I want to go ahead and do is I have Spaces, Space Separator, Space Tag, and Zone. We're going to be using Zones here.
The Spaces have already been placed into the model for you. So, I'm going to go to Zone. And it's going to take me into an editing mode and I have to add Spaces to that Zone.
So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to start here. But what's going on is if you notice the name up here, Zone VAV 1-11. That's actually not the correct name.
I want to go ahead and this is where VAV 1-1 is. And so, I want to go ahead and rename this to be VAV 1-1. So, let's go ahead in the Properties palette.
Let's go ahead and place the name VAV 1-1. Hit Apply. And so, now when we place that, it's going to be putting that name there.
So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to click to add the Space. As you can see, I just have to hover either around the edge or around one of these mid-sections here in the middle of the Space. I'm going to unclick.
And there it goes. It's added that Space into that Zone. I only want that one Zone there.
So, I'm going to go ahead and go up to the Finish Editing Zone. And there we go. Now, the Zone doesn't really show up per se in the view.
So, what I need to go ahead and do is create some annotative elements that will allow me to know exactly what Zones I'm working with. So, what I'm going to do now is I'm going to go to the Annotate tab here. And I'm going to go ahead and use my Detail Lines.
So, I want to go ahead and start with Detail Lines. Pick there. And then, please, in your Line Style on the far right-hand side, please make sure it says Hidden Lines here.
And what I'm going to go ahead and do now is I'm going to zoom in. I'm going to draw a Detail Line diagonally across the Space. It wants to continue making a chain.
But what I'm going to go ahead and do is I'm going to go ahead and press Escape just once. That's going to keep me in that Detail Line command. And I'm going to go ahead and draw another line all the way across.
Hit Escape. And Escape to say that I'm done. And we have effectively created that Zone in a sense.
What has happened is we've created some annotative elements that actually define it. And what I want to go ahead and do now is we'll go ahead and keep continuing on in creating Zones. So, I'm going to go ahead and come down here.
I'm going to go to the Analyze tab. I'm going to go to Zone here. It's going to give me VAV 1-2 as the name, which is exactly what I want.
It keeps continuing with the logical numerical order. I'm going to add this Space here. What has happened is that this Space and this Space have two different VAVs.
So, it's been split up with a Zone separation line or a Space separation line. So, what I'm going to go ahead and do is I'm going to click here. And it's there.
I only want that one Space. Finish Editing Zone. After I finish my Zone, I now want to go to the Annotate tab.
Go to my Detail Lines. And what I want to go ahead and do is I'm going to draw a Detail Line from this endpoint here. It remembers the Line Style that we had the last time we used it.
So, no need to check that. I'm going to go ahead and pick here. Go down to here.
And I'm going to continue this chain. And I'm actually going to go across and pick there. And then I'm going to go ahead and go up to here.
Then I'm going to go ahead and press Escape. Escape again. I want to go ahead and delete this line here.
So, I'm going to select it and just hit the Delete key. What I want to go ahead and do now is I want to go ahead and create another Zone for the VAV down below here. So, I'm going to go to Analyze.
It's a Zone. I'm going to go to Add Space. Add the Space in here.
That's the only Space that I want for this Zone. I'm going to go ahead and hit Finish Editing Zone. I now need to give some annotative elements.
So, I'm going to go ahead and go to Annotate. Go to my Detail Line. And draw a line from here down to the corner of the wall here.
Hit Escape just once. Start another line here.
And go up to here. And it automatically ends the chain because I ended on the endpoint of another line. What I want to go ahead and do now is I'm going to go ahead and start on these offices up here.
So, to start on these offices up here, what I'm going to do is I'm going to hit Escape again to get out of my Place Detail Lines command. I'm going to go to the Analyze tab again. I'm going to go to Zone.
I'm going to go ahead with VAV 1-4, which is the VAV in this space here. Click to select this space to add this space to the Zone. Finish Editing Zone here.
I'm going to go to my Annotate tab. I'm going to go to my Detail Line command. Again, Hidden Line will still be the Line Style.
I'm going to zoom in a little bit just to make it a little easier for me to select the correct snaps. Pick here. Go down.
Pick there. Press Escape just once to end the chain. Pick here.
Go up. Pick there. And press Escape again.
I want to go ahead now and do the Zone for here. So, I'm going to hit Escape again to get out of that Detail Line command. I'm going to go to Analyze > Zone.
Add this space here, which is VAV 1-5. Finish Editing Zone. I want to go ahead and go to the Annotate tab.
Detail Line. Go here to here. Press Escape to end the chain.
From this endpoint, zoom in a little bit so I can get the better endpoint to there. Press Escape. Escape again.
Now, I want to go ahead and add in this Zone or add this space as a Zone. I want to go to Analyze > Zone. Pick here to add that space into the Zone.
Finish Editing Zone. Annotate tab. Detail Line.
Again, it's still Hidden Lines. I'm going to zoom in a little bit just so I can get a better grasp on my snaps. Press Escape once to end the chain.
Go up. Escape. I'm going to go ahead and now press Escape again.
Add this space into a Zone. Analyze > Zone. I'm going to go Add Space.
Hover over until I find and highlight the Space. Pick. Finish Editing Zone.
I'm going to go ahead and go to my Annotate tab. Detail Line. Pick here.
I'm going to zoom in just so I can get my snaps easier. Pick there. Press Escape to end the chain.
Pick here. Pick there. Press Escape again.
I'm going to go ahead and go down to this Office 106. Press Escape to exit out of the Detail Line command. Analyze tab.
Zone. I'm going to add this space here. Finish Editing Zone.
I'm going to go to my Annotate tab. Detail Line. Go here to here.
Here to here. There's that. I want to go ahead and go to Analyze again.
I'm going to press Escape to get out of the Detail Line. I just switched the tab before I actually exited the command. No big deal.
I'm going to go to Zone. Because I have two spaces here, I want the Lobby and the Hallway to be both in the same Zone. I'm just going to add both these spaces to this Zone.
I'm going to pick here and pick here. To add both those spaces into that one Zone, I'm going to Finish Editing Zone. I'm going to go ahead and go to my Annotate tab.
Detail Line. I'm going to draw one line from here down to here. Press Escape.
I'm going to draw another line from here. I'm going across at the same angle. Go up to here.
Then I'm going to go ahead and just do a single line down this hallway so it looks like it's part of the same Zone. It's not going to be in an actual different Zone. Press Escape.
We've effectively now created our zoning plan. That's really all it needs. We are going to go ahead and add some tags in for the VAVs.
We'll do that in the next video. See you then.
