Now that our model is into motion, let's talk about keeping it organized using the scene graph. So the scene graph is over here on the right. We can slide this little thing down, we can pull this over, we can see more.
We can see here that there are lots of lots and lots and lots of folders. It can get very heavy when you're trying to find something specific. Sometimes it's best to simplify these, right? So for instance, let's say you want to quickly hide all glazing.
You can expand the window category in there and toggle it on and off in one click. But you may notice that if I click this one glazing, that each panel is its own thing. If I was to go to each one of these and be like, all right, click, click, you know, it'll take a long time to do that.
So keeping it organized through groups will actually help simplify it. And additionally, with not only with just this import model, the other folders that we talked about in the last lesson, lesson two, we talked about how we can create folders and do all that. So for this, what I think best to do when you do a direct link is you create a new container, you call it 3D imports.
And you, you save that and you drag in your BIM 371 apartment model. And then once inside here, this is where I would start simplifying these things, right? So, you know, I can see here that this whole portion here is my main model. And this is kind of this like second floor element.
Honestly, I don't even think I need this. It doesn't really affect anything. So I can just keep that, keep that off.
Remember, any sort of visibility changes only get saved to a specific view setting that you want. So let's say you do spend all this time turning on and off the visibility or something. And then when you reopen the model, all that turn back on.
So it only saves within one of our media images. So let's say I'm going to create this just an image just in general, right here, then I'm going to I'm going to utilize this for what sort of visibility elements I want to see, right? If I open this, toggle this open, I can see that there are so many different floors and walls, start turning some of these things off, some things disappear, some things stay. But it's just a lot, right? So what I like to do is I like to kind of select a few things.
So furniture, right? All these furnitures, kind of uncheck all of them. So that way, they're all just individual. I will actually, you know, hold down shift, go all the way down to the very bottom of the last piece of furniture, and then right click, move to new container.
Now I can call this all as furniture. And if I uncheck this, I can see that all the furniture is hidden on that one group. So that way, it's simpler.
And then again, I can do the same sort of thing with other sorts of elements, right? I can put all the walls that we have. And I can even do a search, right? I can even search for walls. And so that way, I can see like, okay, all this walls, right, these are all going to be on a new container.
Undo that. Now I can see that all of these walls have now moved to this new container. And I can rename this as walls.
So I can keep doing that, right? Casework is the same thing. I can start, I can search for casework. I can select a, I can move to new container, undo that search, scroll all the way up to here.
I can type this in as casework. And I can see here that it pulled it inside of the wall. So I can drag that out to be kind of outside of that.
I can, I can close the walls piece. Actually, it's still in there. Make sure that you completely drag it outside of the hierarchy of that.
There you go. And as you're going through that, right, you can see like, okay, I want to put this plumbing, plumbing and specialty and lighting fixtures, I'll make those as a new container. And I can call that, you know, specialty.
And then again, if I find more specialty, I can drag those into specialty. And then, you know, wall sweeps, these elements, these can go, I can make a new group, new container for those. And I can call these wall sweeps.
So that way I keep things very organized. So instead of Calreva kind of brings all this stuff into here, I can really kind of simplify it all. So dragging these into the wall sweeps, you know, ceilings, I can make those as a new container for ceilings.
And again, I can drag this wall sweep into the wall sweep folder. And the last is the floors and the floors I could move to new container as floors. So then if I was to say uncheck like, you know, all of these elements, right, that's kind of everything, the entire model ceilings.
So if I want to double check and I'm like, okay, let's see if I did I get them all in the right category. So floors, oh, I still see this as a floor, like what is this? Right? That is a floor that's under specialty. So that would that one move.
So I can actually drag it outside of it, close these up, make sure that I can go around here and put that into my floors. There you go. Now I can turn off my floors and I can see, and this right here, this is actually my, my ground.
So, you know, that's not an actual floor. So yeah, so clearly I simplified this by ceilings and furniture and specialty elements and walls and casework, all that stuff, wall sweeps, furniture, ceilings, walls. So certain elements like this, this is that this wall basic, you know, this may want to be within specialty, but at least this gives me a really clean way of organizing it.
And then as a, if I was ever re-sync and do that, all these files we put in the kind of the same sort of folder arrangements. Keeping your model very organized and clean is something that will maybe spend, it might take a little bit longer to do at the beginning, but over time it'll save you a lot of work. So here are a best practice tools.
You want to rename your groups clearly. So don't leave everything with the default Revit names. If you see a category called generic model, rename it to something like site furniture or miscellaneous.
It'll, that'll help you find what you're looking for. You can always use the selection tool to click on something and see where it's at. And that really kind of helps you use grouping for workflow, you know, group related objects together, like all site elements are all building massing.
You can toggle the visibility when working on different parts of the project. Next is you can collapse unused categories or even delete them or hide them, right? This keeps your scene graph tidy and easier to navigate. So as your project develops, it's normal for the link model to get a little messy.
So that's why regular cleanup and maintenance are essential for a smooth workflow. Let's start by reviewing objects that we really need. You know, we may not want to keep all this furniture in here, right? So we want to just go through that and just like turn that furniture off and you can like re-sync this, this view with no furniture in there.
And then also check for duplicate geometry. Sometimes when you re-sync, categories can accidentally duplicate if you're not careful. You might, you might end up with two versions of the same wall, but then you can always use a scene graph to delete as needed.
Performance is also worth mentioning. You know, Twinmotion can handle large models, but only if they're managed well. If you notice lag, usually means your Revit view is too heavy.
So go back to Revit, hide unnecessary categories, and then re-sync. Keeps your Twinmotion file lean and responsive. And also it's best to establish a routine for your syncing.
If you're working on a project as a team, you know, decide when updates should be pushed to Twinmotion. Maybe it's once at the end of each day or after major design reviews. Having a consistent routine prevents accidental overwrites and keeps the visualization in sync with the design without causing confusion.
This is, this is really, really powerful. Like if you're working on a project and the design is evolving or the client is constantly modifying and changing, having a direct link to the Revit model so it's having live connections is great. But if it's in process, right? It's like someone in the office is drawing a wall and instead of making it, you know, 10 feet, they made it 20 feet, right? And they, and if it was synced, well then all those kind of weird geometry would come in.
You want to make sure you're kind of, all your design process is done, your modeling changes are done, and then sync. Some common mistakes I've seen people make is forgetting to clean the Revit model first. So this leaves a messy Twinmotion file full of grids, even like mechanical equipment that are really heavy.
So always start off with your dedicated 3D view in Revit. I'll open that up. Start off with this, this view with exactly what you want to see.
Don't sync too often. If you sync every minor change, you risk overwriting Twinmotion work repeatedly. So do it in batches.
I see people overwrite their Twinmotion materials often. So be in mind that when you sync, you can replace custom things. So be very careful when you're doing that to make sure that you're not overwriting what the work that you've done within Twinmotion.
I like to just sync once, make sure that my Revit model is at a good spot, happy with, and then work in Twinmotion. If things change, I'll deal with it, but I try not to go back and forth with that. And then the other thing that I've seen is not organizing the scene graph.
I'm going to reiterate this again and again and again. A disorganized scene graph slows you down and makes it difficult to manage the model later. Spend the time organizing it early as it definitely pays off.
