Adding Sprinklers to Reflected Ceiling Plan: Dimensioning and Spacing Tutorial

Dimensioning and Spacing Sprinklers in a Reflected Ceiling Plan

Delve into the process of populating a level 2 reflected ceiling plan with sprinklers and learn how to dimension them correctly. This article explores the specific spacing required for sprinklers and how to dimension them for accuracy and compliance.

Key Insights

  • The article demonstrates how to add sprinklers to a level 2 reflected ceiling plan, ensuring they are appropriately spaced and dimensioned for optimal functionality and compliance with safety regulations.
  • Specific spacing between sprinklers is crucial, and the article illustrates how to measure and adjust these dimensions accurately, stating that sprinkler spacing should not exceed 15 feet apart in most cases.
  • The article provides practical tips on how to use tools such as DI and AL to dimension and align sprinklers accurately on a reflected ceiling plan, enhancing precision and ensuring correct alignment in relation to walls and other sprinklers.

In this video, we'll continue adding sprinklers to our Level 2 reflected ceiling plan. Let's check out the storage room area here. Some of our sprinklers, as you can see, have not yet been populated, and we'll need to dimension these out.

So let's go first to this sprinkler here, use Create Similar, and place one about here, and another about here, then one more in this area here, and another about here, and another about here. Now this doesn't matter quite yet because we're going to dimension these out, as there is specific spacing that we want to have for these sprinklers. So let's start with the sprinkler right here.

Let's create a dimension. We'll go to DI, and start from this wall. Hit TAB to our sprinkler there, then to our sprinkler there, and again, hit TAB right here, and move out of the way so we have no overlapping dimensions.

Now let's go from this sprinkler—press DI again—make sure we're going in this direction. Okay, press DI again, and zoom into this sprinkler. Make sure we're going in a horizontal line through the middle of the sprinkler so we can dimension downward. We'll go to the next sprinkler and then to the wall. Hit TAB and make sure we're not dimensioning to anything else.

There we go. Okay, let's click on this sprinkler and change this dimension to three feet. This one is 12 feet, one and a half inches.

Let's click this sprinkler here and make this 12. Okay, next, these sprinklers here. Let's click on this one, and we'll make it 15.

Right now it's at 15 feet, nine inches—the dimension I have. We cannot go more than 15 feet apart most of the time in our sprinkler spacing. Okay, this will be pretty good, and we can keep our dimensions here because later when we annotate our reflected ceiling plans, we'll be adding more dimensions, so we can leave these as is.

Let's move on to these sprinklers here. Hit DI again. We'll go to the wall here, to the sprinkler, move out of the way, then hit TAB, find the center of the sprinkler, find the center of the next sprinkler, and press Escape twice.

There we are. Okay, now let's click on this sprinkler here. We'll make this dimension about six feet.

Let's use the Align tools to get them both lined up, so we'll type AL, zoom in—there we go—and this sprinkler here. Now we're aligned there. Okay, let's click on this sprinkler one more time.

We'll change this to two feet, nine inches. Okay, and the last sprinkler here—let's change this to 10 feet. Okay, go ahead, you can pause the video here and make sure your dimensions match what I have here.
