Discover how to place and label the point of intersection in CAD design software, with specific focus on Civil 3D. Understand the nuances between different types of intersections, and how to select and label the desired point of intersection.
Key Insights
- The process of placing a point of intersection label involves navigating to annotation, alignment labels, and then point of intersection.
- There can be confusion around the terminology as there are different types of intersections, but in this context, a point of intersection refers to the point of tangency on a singular alignment rather than two alignments intersecting each other.
- Once the desired curve has been selected, the software labels the point of intersection, providing details such as the station, northing, and easting.

We're going to get to placing the last label style that we talked about, which is point of intersection. Now, we're going to go ahead and go up to annotation, we're going to go to our alignment labels, and we're going to go to point of intersection.
Now, we have multiple points of intersection in this drawing, but I only want to label one of them. So I'm going to go ahead and select points of intersection rather than multiple points of intersection. Now, the nomenclature for labeling point of intersection is a little bit confusing because you can have different kinds of intersections.
So some people may think that labeling the point of intersection means the point that two alignments were intersecting each other. However, this point of intersection that we're labeling is more associated with the PI along a singular alignment. So the point of intersection of tangency.
So what we're going to go ahead and do is Civil 3D is asking us to select the tangent in or curve of PI to label. So, for example, if I wanted to label this PI here, I could select this curve, and it would label this PI. So I'm going to go ahead and do that.
So I've selected that curve, it has labeled this PI, and it has given me information for the station, northing and easting. So just keep in mind that when we're placing a point of intersection label, it is not a point of alignment intersection, but rather a point of tangency intersection. Now that we've placed this label, I'm going to go ahead and save the drawing, and then I'll meet you in the next video.
