Managing Parcel Unions and Dissolutions in Civil 3D: A Comprehensive Guide

Mastering Parcel Unions and Dissolutions in Civil 3D: Practical Techniques for Parcel Management

Learn how to perform parcel unions and parcel dissolutions within Civil 3D utilizing the Parcel Creation Toolbar. We will discuss the importance of the destination parcel selection and the crucial need for retaining original lines between parcels.

Key Insights

  • The Parcel Creation Toolbar in Civil 3D enables users to perform parcel unions and dissolutions. To dissolve a parcel union, a parcel union must first exist.
  • When creating a parcel union, the destination parcel is important. For instance, if you want to unify parcels 4, 29, and 30, the destination parcel could be property 30. The labels for the unified properties will then disappear, and they will be unified into the destination parcel.
  • One crucial point to remember when performing parcel unions is the need to retain the original boundary line between properties. If this line is deleted, the option to dissolve the union is lost, indicating the permanence of the union.

In this video, we're going to talk about doing parcel unions and parcel dissolves inside of Civil 3D using the Parcel Creation Toolbar. So to do that, I'm going to go ahead and zoom in on some of these Freeform Create Parcels that we made in the previous videos, and I'm going to drop down my Parcel Creation menu, and I'm going to go ahead and go to my Parcel Creation Tools button.

So from here, what we're going to end up doing is we are going to be working in this drop-down menu for Parcel Unions and Dissolve Parcel Unions. So to dissolve a Parcel Union, you first have to have a Parcel Union. So what we're going to do is we're going to click Parcel Union, and Civil 3D is going to prompt us to select a destination parcel.

What you're going to do is you're going to pick the destination parcel for the parcels that you're going to unify. So let's say we want to unify Parcels 4,29, and 30 into Property 30. So Property 30 is going to be the destination parcel.

Then we are going to select the parcels and press ENTER. So I'm going to go ahead and select Property 4 and Property 29, and I'm going to hit ENTER. And what you'll notice is the labels for Property 4 and Property 29 disappear, and I'm going to go ahead and exit.

And when I select Property 30, we're now going to see that Property 30 has the boundary of these three parcels because they were unified. Now that I've unified some parcels, I can now dissolve that union. Now I'm going to go ahead and drop back down into the Parcel menu.

I'm going to click on Parcel Creation Tools, and I'm going to open the Parcel Union menu and select Dissolve Parcel Union. And so what you can do now is you can dissolve that union that we just created by selecting the area label for the parcel that we want to dissolve. We're going to go ahead and click on Property 30, and it now dissolves back to three parcels again.

So I'm going to go ahead and exit again, and I'm going to do another union. So I'm going to go to Parcel Creation Tools. I'm going to open the menu for Parcel Union, and I'm going to unify Properties 33 and 35.

I'm going to unify Property 35 into Property 33 and hit ENTER. So just as before, what you'll notice is that that property was unified into this property here. Now I'm going to show you something.

What you have to be careful about when you're doing unions is that you retain the property boundary between the original two parcels. So you may be tempted to go ahead and say, oh, well, I've unified these parcels, let's go ahead and just delete this line, and you're not wrong.

You could just go ahead and delete that line. The only problem is that you have dissolved that line. You've deleted that entity out.

And so if I go up into Parcel Creation Tools, and I try to dissolve that Parcel Union, because I don't have that boundary there anymore, I can't dissolve that parcel. I'm getting an option

For select from Layout Tools. And so you won't have the option to dissolve that union again, because you've removed the line that separated the two parcels that were unified.

If you want to ever be able to dissolve that union, you need to make sure that you retain that old line. Now, there are some additional ways to unify parcels or delete parcels entirely. And we'll get into that in the next video.
