Learn how to prepare your corridors and intersections by clearing out bow ties in Civil 3D. The article explains the process of grip editing the regions, sliding to create space, and selecting the correct sections to clear bow ties effectively.
Key Insights
- The first step in clearing out bow ties in Civil 3D is to conduct grip editing on the regions where the curve returns are, ensuring that they have enough room.
- Clearing bow ties involves sliding sections back and forth to create room for the curve returns. This process is repeated multiple times across different sections.
- After expanding the curve returns and modifying the bow tie regions, the next step involves selecting the corridor and choosing the 'clear bow ties' option. Civil 3D will then prompt you to specify your baseline and select the parts of the road entering and exiting the curve before solving the bow tie.

So the last thing that we have to do to be ready to have our corridors and intersections looking the way that we want them to do is to clear out these bow ties. So the important thing to note about bow ties is that your curve returns need to have enough room to clear out these bow ties.
So what I'm going to be doing is I'm going to be grip editing the regions that we have these curve returns in so that they're displayed properly to clear these bow ties. So what I went and did is I'm going to grab this grip, slide it out this direction to clear out some space for this curve return to come out. I'm going to do the same thing here.
I'm going to slide this back to clear out space for this curve return here in this curve return here. I'm going to grab this grip here, slide it out to make room for this curve return right here. Again, I'm going to go here.
I'm going to actually slide this section back in a little bit. I'm going to slide this section out, I'm going to slide this back to create room for both of these curve returns, and then I'm going to slide this, this direction to make room. I'm actually going to undo that because I need to slide this one out to make room for my curve return.
I'm going to go up to here to slide this one out, and then I'm going to go ahead and expand out my curve returns. So I'm going to expand my curve return out to this point here, I'm going to expand my curve return out to this point here, I'm going to expand this curve return out to this point here, I'm going to expand to this point here, I'm going to come over to here, expand to here, and expand here to this point here, and here to this point here. Now that we have these curve returns expanded out, and we have our bow tie regions able to be modified, I'm going to go ahead and select this corridor, I'm going to go up to clear bow ties, and so Civil 3D is going to ask me to specify my baseline.
That is the alignment that your corridor is associated with. For this curve return, it is this alignment right here. Now it's asking me to select my starting sub-entity, we want to select the portion of the road coming into the curve, and we want to select the portion of the road coming out of the curve.
Now we're given this option for how we want to solve this bow tie. So I'm going to pick somewhere outside of where my bow tie is, and then I'm going to hit ENTER to accept the solution, Civil 3D updates this bow tie and removes it. I'm going to do the same thing here, I'm going to select my radius, my line, and my line, and then I'm going to pick somewhere outside of my bow tie, and hit ENTER, I now have a picked solution for that bow tie.
I'm going to do the same thing up here at this corridor, I'm going to go to clear corridor bow ties, I'm going to pick the curve, pick the line, pick the line, I'm going to pick somewhere outside of this bow tie, and hit ENTER, and then I'm going to do the same thing, clear corridor bow ties, I'm going to select this corner, select this line, select this line, and then I'm going to select somewhere outside of the bow tie, hit ENTER, hit escape, and I've now cleared the bow ties that were associated with my intersections. I'm going to go ahead and save this drawing, and then I'll meet you in the next video.
