Learn how to use multiple segment labels for dev branch alignment in Civil 3D. This article explains the process of annotation, selection and placement of labels on multiple segments, curves and tangents along an alignment for detailed navigation.
Key Insights
- The article explains the difference between single segment placement and multiple segment placement in Civil 3D. While both are identical, the single segment placement is for a singular entity along the alignment, whereas multiple segment labels each segment, curve, and tangent of an entire alignment.
- Once the multiple segment is selected, the article guides through the process of selecting the alignment and placing labels on tangents and curves. This is achieved through the multiple segment function, which pre-determines the information on the labels.
- The article also details the process of fine-tuning these labels. It provides options for line label style, curve label style, and spiral label style. Furthermore, it mentions the ability to create tags for these segments which can be associated with creating tables.

In this video, we're going to go ahead and do a multiple segment label for our dev branch alignment. So I'm going to go ahead and go up to annotation.
I'm going to go to my alignment labels and I'm going to go ahead and select multiple segment. The reason we're doing multiple segment, not single segment is that single segment placement and multiple segment placement are identical, except for that single segment placement does it for a single entity along your alignment, whereas multiple segment will label all of the segments, curves and tangents along an entire alignment. So I want to label all of my pieces of my alignment.
So I'm going to go ahead and go with a multiple segment. So what Civil 3D is prompting me to do once I've selected multiple segment is it's asking me to select my alignment. I'm going to navigate over to my dev branch.
I'm going to select that alignment. And what Civil 3D has done now after I've selected that alignment is it has placed me labels on my tangents and on my curves with information predetermined by the function that we selected, which is the multiple segment function. Now, like we said before, if you wanted to have a little bit more fine tune control of placing these labels, you could go to add labels.
You could drop down, select alignment, select the type. We could do station offset, fixed point station, offset, multiple segments. And then inside of here, you have the options for the line label style, the curve label style, and a spiral label style.
We have no spirals, so we didn't get any spiral labels, but that is here. Now you do have the option with segments for alignments to have tags and we'll get to tags later, but that is associated with creating tables for these segments. So I'm going to go ahead and hit close.
I'm going to escape out. I'm going to zoom out a little bit. I'm going to save and then I'll meet you in the next video.
