Updating Clash Model and Report in Navisworks: Structural vs Plumbing Test

Refreshing Clash Test Results with Updated Models in Navisworks: Improving Accuracy and Streamlining Workflow

Discover efficient ways to update clash models and subsequently develop updated clash reports using Navisworks. Learn the importance of using updated models, the significance of redlining, and how to interpret the status of clashes, and more.

Key Insights

  • The article provides an in-depth guide on updating clash models in Navisworks by replacing old models with updated ones in designated project folders. This allows Navisworks to recognize and load updated information.
  • The tutorial also emphasizes the importance of redlining in recognizing changes in models. It aids in keeping track of the prior state and the changes made, specifically beneficial when models are updated frequently.
  • Understanding the status of clashes is crucial for efficient project management. The article details this by explaining the differences between 'old', 'active', and 'resolved' clashes, and how to manage them to keep the clash report updated and relevant.

Welcome back to the Navisworks video series. In this video we'll be updating our clash model and then using that updated clash model to create a updated clash report. And we'll be using the BIM361-complete model in lesson 6. And then make sure you have clash detective open and that autohead is turned off.

We'll be concentrating on the structural versus plumbing clash test. And last time we made a clash test and then put some red lines on it, then exported a clash report to both nwd using viewpoints and also to a html file. And at this point you would actually distribute these clash reports to your design team.

In this case you'd send this one to structural and plumbing, and plumbing would get the red lines and comments, and then they would be able to update their models accordingly. When they're done updating then they can export another nwc. And because we're using an nwf model, then if we look at the selection tree we'll see that all of our nwc files are links.

This means that if plumbing were to update their model and we replaced the original nwc model that was in the folder that our nwf is looking for it in, in our case is lesson 2, then we can simply refresh our model after replacing the file and navisworks will then have the updated plumbing information. So that's the first thing that we're going to do. So in explorer you want to go to your lesson 6 folder, and you'll see a folder called updated models.

This is the model ftp folder or other distribution method that you and your team use. You'll see that the bim361plumbingx.nwc model is in there. We can right click and copy on it, then go back to the lesson 2 folder, and we will paste and replace the original.

Now my plumbing model is more up-to-date than all of the other models that are in this folder. Now we can go back to navisworks and we can hit the refresh button. You can also hit f5 on your keyboard and navisworks will look for all of the model locations in here and then it will find any updates.

Once it's updated you'll see that there is an exclamation mark next to all of our clash tests and that's because we refreshed and navisworks sensed that we had some updated information. So the status of all of our clashes is now set to old until we update this clash test. But for now let's go through our clashes and let's take a look at what the updates were.

So this is the reason I like to redline. This way I know where things were before and what I was talking about since it doesn't actually give you a record of where your pipes were beforehand. We'll see in this case that this pipe is now wrapping this column instead of going straight through it and if we don't want to see all of the other objects dimmed we can uncheck them other and then check on auto reveal and we'll see the updated model.

Now let's take a look at what kind of effect this has on our new clash test. If we go to structural versus plumbing we can either right click and then go to run or we can simply select this update all button that's underneath all the clash tests. When we hit that button and navisworks will run through all of the tests at once that'll give us a new status for them instead of old it's saying that they're now done and we have no exclamation mark.

And in our results for structural versus plumbing let's take a look at what we have. Group 1,3, 4, and 5 are now set to resolved. The yellow indicates resolved you can also see the status spelled out in the fourth column and then everything else turns to an orange color and our status is set to active.

Before it was set to new we no longer have new clashes oh I guess with the exception of plumbing versus mechanical and all of the clashes that we saw before are set to either active, approved, or resolved. So an active clash means that it's been seen before it has not been resolved so it's just continuing for the next clash test. If we take a look at the resolved ones we'll see that it's these three that we had highlighted before with our red line tool.

It's possible to keep all of these resolved clashes or clash groups in your clash tests if you would like to but because we have these clash reports actually exported then we already have a record of them. Group 1 is still here, group 3 is still here, so there's no longer really a need for them and they take up space and they also count as clashes. We can easily get rid of these by hitting the compact button and you'll find the compact button right here by rerun tests.

Once you click it will take off all the resolved clashes and will leave us with a lower clash number and it'll also take off the resolved number. So with our updated clash we can export a report. Let's just do the current test and first we'll export a few points.

We can make a new folder for that, call it today's date. We'll put our clash test in that folder and then we can set it under the clash reports folder. We can also export to html tabular and now we have two sets of clash reports.

We want to still make sure that we publish this as an nwd file. When you publish you'll see that you have the ability to drop down and use previous titles that you've used and then once you hit ok you'll be able to save this in your clash reports with today's date. I just took the name from my other folder and now we still have our nwf file.

Make sure you save this file and that's how to update a clash report. And that concludes this video in this course. I hope you enjoyed the whole thing.

I hope you find this program to be fun and incredibly useful. Thank you.
