Incorporate kitchen appliances into a 3D model using AutoCAD. This insightful guide explains how to add and manipulate objects like a refrigerator, range, kitchen sink, and dishwasher into your architectural designs.
Key Insights
- Learn how to add appliances like a refrigerator, range, and dishwasher into your 3D residential model using AutoCAD. This includes copying the object from the appliance category, pasting it into the model, and adjusting its placement and orientation.
- Understand how to make specific adjustments to each appliance, such as rotating them into the right direction, moving them into the correct place, and giving them 'breathing room' for a more realistic depiction.
- Discover the importance of applying the correct layer to each appliance to achieve the desired visual effect in your 3D model. The process of changing the layer from a default setting to a specific one is explained in detail.

Now let's add in our kitchen appliances and sink. We have a refrigerator, a range, a kitchen sink, and a dishwasher. Let's go ahead and go back to our residential blocks in AutoCAD.
We'll zoom out and let's start with the appliance category and we'll look across and find our fridge plan. We'll select that and do CTRL C on our keyboard back to our model and we'll zoom in here in this fridge cubby and we'll do CTRL V to paste. So there it is.
It's dashed because it's not on the right layer but we will get that fixed soon. Let's just click outside of our first floor plan one time. So click and we'll place it.
We will select it and we'll type in ro to rotate. We'll click right on the back center one time, click, type in 90, and enter. There it is.
Now let's rotate it one more time. We'll select it, ro to rotate, click on the back center, and this time 180, enter. There we go.
There it is. And it's a little bit overlapping our plan so I'm going to select it and use the move command to pull it out of the way. Now I want to center it in this space so I will next select it, m for move, and click the back center again.
I'll get a midpoint or insertion point right there, click one time, and I want the midpoint of this back yellow line for that wall. And there it is all centered. Now I need to move it forward in the cubby so I will select it and move one more time.
With ortho turned on I can move it to the left and let's go ahead and move it 10 inches, enter. Okay so now we need to apply the correct layer to this refrigerator. We'll select it, go to properties, and the layer we want is a appliance.
Right now it's set to layer 0. I will pull that down and I want a-appl and it turns a nice magenta color. That looks pretty good. Okay one is done so let's go ahead and move on to the next one.
It's a range and we'll go back to our blocks, we'll select the range, we'll do CTRL C on our keyboard, go back to our floor plan, and we'll do CTRL V to paste. Again I'll place it off to the side so I can rotate it. I'll click one time, select it, ro to rotate, we'll click at the front center this time, and with ortho turned on I'll drag my cursor straight down and click.
Now I'll select it, m for move, and I want this bottom left corner. I'll click one time and go to the bottom left corner of this counter and click. Now that's all the way to the front and against the wall we need to give it some breathing room so I'll select it and we'll move it twice.
Our first move is to move it back from the edge of the counter 1.5 inches. We'll select it again and move again and this time we'll pull it away from that side wall by seven inches and enter. There it is.
Now I need to apply its layer. I will select it and go to properties and change the layer from 0 up to a-appl. Okay that's looking great.
We've got another appliance to add here. We want the dishwasher so let's go ahead and click on our blocks again. We will look for our dishwasher, our dishwasher-plan.
We'll select it one time and do CTRL C to copy. Then go back here to our floor plan and CTRL V to paste. There it is, our dishwasher.
I'll click one time to place it. Now I'll select it and do ro to rotate. We'll click on one corner of the dishwasher and we'll drag our cursor straight up and that leans it back and into its correct orientation.
Now we'll select it and m for move and just like the range we'll grab the top corner and then the top corner of the counter and it's exactly in that corner. Now we'll select it and move it to give it some breathing room. We're going to first move it down three inches and we'll select it again and move it again and this time back 1.5 inches.
That looks good. Now we'll select it and go to properties and we want to change its layer to a-appliance layer. You might ask, well it still remained a dashed line and that's because the block itself has a dashed line that is not able to be overridden.
It's made specially for this because we want it to be dashed because it's below the countertop. All right, now we want to add our kitchen sink. Let's go ahead and close our properties window, go back to our blocks and look for sinks.
There's a sink category and we have a sink kitch plan. That's one we want. We'll select it, CTRL C, back to our floor plan, CTRL V to paste it and click one time.
Now I'll select it, r-o to rotate. I'll click pretty much anywhere on the sink and move my cursor straight up with ortho turned on and click again and it rotates it into the correct orientation. Now this one's a little bit trickier to move because there is no corner.
There's a circle there. I'll have to move it a couple times. I'll do m for move.
I'll grab this bottom edge of the sink and click the bottom edge of the counter. Now it's exactly lined up with the bottom of the counter. I'll select it again, m for move again.
I'll click the front of it, go straight to the right and align it with the front of the counter. Now it is in that bottom corner. Select it again and now I can move it.
I want to move it back that one and a half inches. I want to move it up seven and a half inches, 7.5 inches, enter. Okay now is this an appliance? It's a sink.
