In this detailed tutorial, you will learn how to correctly configure and position doors within a design layout. By using mirror and copy actions, and understanding hinge points and door thresholds, you can efficiently place and adjust a variety of doors within a floor plan.
Key Insights
- The tutorial walks you through the process of efficiently copying door configurations and positioning them accurately within a design. This includes understanding how to work with hinge points and door thresholds.
- The 'mirror' action is key in correctly positioning doors within the layout. This action allows you to create a reflection of the door configuration on the opposite side of a given point, which can be crucial in maintaining symmetry in your design.
- The tutorial also emphasizes the importance of saving your work frequently to prevent loss of data. This is usually done by pressing Control + S.

So I know that this door here and this door here are two sixes, so I'm going to say copy. I want to use this configuration for right now. And I'm going to copy it from the end of here to the end of here.
And then I'm going to mirror these guys from the end of here straight over and delete the source. Now, I'm going to also copy a door here. So I'm going to say copy this door from the end to the end.
Control S to save. I also need to work with my door threshold, but because we're going to end up having a masonry layer on the outside of the doors, I'm going to do my thresholds later on. For my front doors, which are three O's, I'm going to copy these from the swing point.
I'm going to pop it here. And I'm going to mirror it. Type in M-I for mirror.
These guys end up here straight over. Delete the source. I'm also going to pop in a door right here.
So I'm just going to copy an existing door from a hinge point to the hinge point. And it looks as if everything's on the right side because if I were to rotate this door from the end there, you can see that it would swing up in that direction. When it's closed, the hinge point will be on the inside face of the door.
I have a three O door that's going on in the laundry room. So I'm going to copy this set of doors from the hinge point to here. And I have a two six door that goes here.
So I'm going to copy this from the hinge point to there. And I'm hitting enter or the space bar to accept my enter. Now I'm going to pop in a two foot four door here.
So I'm going to copy this from the hinge point to here. And copy this door from the hinge point to here. And then I'm going to mirror.
Type in M-I for mirror. Pick these guys. Enter.
Go to the side. Pick. Erase the source.
I have a door that's going to be a two six here. I'm pretty sure. I'm just going to type a D-I from there to there.
And I see that it's two foot six. So I can either type D-I or I could have chosen measure from there. So I'm going to choose the two six door.
I'm going to copy this door from the hinge point to here. But you can see that in the handout that this door is not fully in the open position. So I'm going to rotate it.
So rotate the door from the hinge point. Positive rotation is counterclockwise. So I'm going to type in minus 45.
Whoops. Positive rotation is counterclockwise. So I've messed this up.
No big deal. Rotate this guy. End of here.
Ninety degrees. And then I'm going to choose trim. This will be my cutting edge.
And pick on this line here. Control S to save the file. I'm going to work on the doors in this bedroom.
I see that this is a two six door. So I'm going to copy these sets of doors right here from here to here. Copy these guys from there to there.
And I'm going to mirror M-I, these two entities, from this hinge point. Ortho on. And delete the source.
I believe this is a two four door. Just do a distance check. Two foot four.
That's correct. I'm going to copy. I can type in CP.
So I'm going to copy this door from the end to the end. Mirror these guys from the hinge point down. Yes.
We're deleting the source objects. I'm going to rotate these guys. End of here.
Minus 45 degrees. Trim. Here's my cutting edge.
Get rid of that. Control S to save. Work on my bedroom door over here.
I see that this is a two six door. So I'm going to copy the appropriate two six door. This is pretty close right here.
From the end of there to the end of there. I'm going to copy this door. Oh, I'm going to copy this door from the end of here to the hinge point there.
And mirror M-I. These guys enter. Hinge point straight over.
Delete the source. Save the file. I'm going to work on the master bedroom door right here.
I'm going to copy. Let's see. I'm going to choose these doors from the end of here over to here.
And then mirror these from the swing point straight over. Delete the source. I'm going to work on the closet door.
Which, again, I'm going to confirm the distance. D-I for distance. It's a two six.
I'm going to copy C-P. This door from the end of here. Place it where the hinge will be.
And then mirror M-I. These guys here straight over. Delete the source files.
Control-S to save. I have a two foot four door to place here and here. I'm going to copy this set of doors from the end here over to the end here.
Copy these. And, again, I choose where the hinge point is going to be. Place it where the hinge point will be.
And then mirror these guys from the hinge point straight over. Delete the source. Save the file.
I have my bulk storage area to do. I'm going to check my distance from end to end. I see that it's five feet, which means I need to have a two six door there.
Copy this door from the hinge point to the end of here. M-I for mirror. These.
Choose the end of the arc. So you need to be careful that you don't get ahead of where you're thinking. You can see that I've done that a couple of times.
Now, it appears that we have all of our doors in except for the back door. We need to work on the sliding doors and on the closet doors. The garage door is a two eight, I believe.
I'm going to check the distance here and here. It's a two eight. So what I'm going to do is I'm just going to copy a two six door from the hinge point and place it at the hinge point.
And then I'm going to go stretch. S-Enter for stretch. C-Enter for crossing.
Pick, pick. Arbitrary base point, go down two inches. Then I'm going to go back to arc.
Start. Center. End.
I have that there. Control-S to save. And I think that we're in a good enough point that we can save this video and then come back and wrap up the remainder of the doors.
