Discover the methodical process of constructing architectural digital models, focusing on the construction of wall structures. Learn the intricacies of using lines, offsets, fillets, and trim commands to build and clean up your model, paying attention to dimensions and the direction of your lines.
Key Insights
- The building process begins with drawing lines and offsetting them by specific measurements, such as six inches, to create the structure of the walls.
- Cleaning up the model involves the use of fillets to round off corners, the trim command to remove excess lines, and frequent saving to prevent data loss.
- The orientation of the model's faces are critical to its construction, requiring careful attention to whether lines are drawn to the left or right side of the existing structures.

Let's continue building our walls. So I'm going to draw a line from this endpoint, straight over, and I'm going to offset that by six inches. I'm going to begin focusing on the foyer. I'm going to draw a line from this endpoint, straight up, and then extend this line up to here.
Again, I typed EX for extend. I'm going to offset by two feet five inches, this line to the right, and this line to the right, and now do some cleanup. So Fillet and Fillet, Trim, Trim, and I'm going to take these lines here, pull them over, and take this line here, pull it over.
I'm going to Trim and clean up this intersection. I'm going to erase this line and save the file. I'm going to do some more offsetting.
I'm going to offset by three feet two inches, again paying attention to which side of the lines my wall faces are going. Move these lines straight up, Trim through here, trim there, clean that up, and save the file. I'm going to offset by five feet.
Again, this line is going to the left wall face, offset by six inches, and do some Filleting. Control+S to save. I'm going to extend these lines up to here, offset by four feet seven inches for the outside face, offset downward by six inches, save the file, and then do some cleanup.
So I'm just going to Trim and clean up through here, and if I'd like, I can Fillet this line, offset by three inches, and by two feet six inches for my door opening, move these lines over to there, erase this line, Trim through here, and save the file. Trim through here, Zoom Extents, save the file. So again, I'm cleaning up as I work.
Now, to start developing this area down here, I really need to build it from the lower geometry, because the dimensions provided are from this top geometry. So I'm going to offset by five feet seven and a half inches, offset to the outside face, offset by six inches, and then I'm going to extend these lines down to here. While I'm here, I'll extend this line over to here. I'm just going to confirm some dimensions.
I can either do a dimension or measure the distance. I'll measure the distance from this endpoint to this endpoint, five feet seven and a half inches, Escape, save the file, Trim, and clean this up.
Trim through here, clean this up. Control+S to save the file. I'm going to begin working on this bedroom now.
So I'm going to offset by ten feet four inches. I'll read the dimensions and make sure I'm offsetting to the proper sides. So that's the ten feet four inches, then offset downward by six inches. I can see that it's time to clean up this area.
So Trim, clean this up, Trim, clean this up, and Trim to clean this area up. Control+S to save. I see that I have a two feet three inches offset for my closet area, so I'm going to first offset downward by three feet six inches, which is the vertical dimension from the upper face to the upper face, and then offset downward by six inches, and offset by two feet three inches.
Again, reading carefully, Trim crossing. Oh, I'm also going to offset here by six inches for the wall thickness, Fillet and Fillet, Trim crossing, clean this area up, offset by three inches, and then by two feet six inches for the door, and move the selected lines to the right.
Trim, select, select, and select. Control+S and save the file.
