Explore the process of creating and adjusting linear dimensions for architectural designs, specifically focusing on both interior and exterior features. The article also discusses strategies for dealing with potential issues, such as adjusting the visibility of design elements for precise measurements.
Key Insights:
- The tutorial discusses the addition of linear dimensions to interior design elements such as windows, doors, and specific patterns like the herringbone pattern. The process involves adjusting the visibility of certain layers to ensure precise measurements.
- The addition of linear dimensions to exterior elements is also covered. The process involves careful selection of points to avoid confusion with the extension line, and paying close attention to the end point echo to ensure precision.
- The article emphasizes the importance of precise dimension spacing and how to adjust it, highlighting that the value is always positive and varies depending on which side the dimensions are on. It also discusses how to manage potential issues, such as too many points, and offers solutions like getting closer to the design for better visibility.

If you look at some components of this area, you can see that on the string on the inside of the living room windows, that we're not only anchoring the window to the edge of the building, we're also showing a dimension string to the midpoint of the window. So I'm going to go on, zoom in, do a linear dimension from the end of the building, shift right, do midpoint, come down to here, and place this guy right about here, and then I will continue to the end of the window, and then I'm going to go to the mid of the door, to the end of the door, I'm sorry, to the mid of the next window, and then to the end of the wall. I can continue if I'd like.
Now, you can see that I have a problem. I want to put some dimensions that go to my herringbone pattern, but the herringbone pattern is turned off. So I'm going to go to home ribbon, and I'm going to turn on my A-Wall masonry layer, and you can see that it's wanting to continue, so I will just erase this guy.
I'll go to my annotate, do a linear dimension, I'm going to say from the end of the herringbone, end of the herringbone, let it link up here, and then I'm going to go continue to the mid of the window. Save the file. I have a couple more dimensions I need to throw in here, so I'm going to do a linear dimension, end of the wall, end of the herringbone, place this guy here.
Now, you'll notice that when I did this dimension, that I went to the herringbone here, that I did not move it back to here, because you can see that by moving it back to there, I lose that gap that was going on in this area. So I'm just going to pick on here, pick this grip, make it go back down into there. I'm going to do a linear dimension, end of the herringbone, end of the wall, place that dimension string right there.
I have a couple more dimensions to throw in. I want to throw a linear dimension, end of the wall, end of the fireplace. There's our 8-inch separation there.
Linear dimension, end of the wall, end of the setback, I can place it there. If I'd like, I can do a continue to the end and to the end. If I'd like to maintain my 2-foot distance, you can see that that would be a little bit too far.
I really don't need this distance, but this dimension doesn't hurt anything. So what I want to do is to change my dimension spacing from this horizontal string down to this string and let it be a foot. So I'm going to say, dimension spacing, here's one that I like, dimensions to space, choose these guys, and I'm going to let a value be of minus 12, so they will go down by 12 inches.
It says it's not going to accept that, I'm just going to type in 12, and so what it's done is it's accepted the 12 because I'm on the lower side. So again, depending upon which side your dimensions are on, the spacing value is always a positive number. If I'm choosing up here where I'm showing, and if I were to say 12, it would put it 12 inches up there.
If I were to be choosing on this side, it would be putting it at 12 inches down there. So I believe that all of the dimensions that I need for the fireplace are pretty much in place. If I'd like to, again there's no need, it's really redundant, but I could do a linear dimension, end of the herringbone, end of the wall, and let it line up with this entity over here on the right.
And I save that file, I'm showing all of my dimensions there, I'm going to back off a bit, and I'm going to run the string across the middle of the house. So I'm going to do a linear dimension from the end of the wall to the end of the wall here, place it here, and then I'll just do my continue, and again watch the handout, and make sure you're going to the correct side of the geometry. Just again, watch what you're doing.
Now I've got an issue here, too many points, get in closer, and save the file. I'm near the laundry room, just going to run some strings in there, I'm going to do a linear dimension from the end of the wall to the end of the inside of the wall, and place it over there. I have another linear dimension, end of the outside corner of the wall, inside corner of the wall, and pick it right over here, CTRL S to save.
I'm going to pan down a little bit towards the garage. What I've noticed is that I need to put a step down here for the garage, so I'm just going to draw a line, L-enter from line, from here to here, MA for match properties, here's the source, there's the destination, because we normally have a step down at the garage. I'm going to draw a linear dimension from the inside to the corner, pull it down here, and then continue to the end, and to the end of the wall, enter.
CTRL S to save. Now I'm going to start working on some exterior dimensions. Once again, I don't need to have my A-Wall Masonry layer on, because I have a concern that I might grab the wrong lines when I do my dimensioning, so go to Home, Ribbon, go on and turn off A-Wall Masonry.
Go to Annotate, Linear Dimension, end of the house, end of the garage, place it on this outermost line, linear dimension, end of the house. Again, remember, go to the geometry, don't go to the extension line. So from end of the house to the end of the house, pull it down to here, and then continue to the end of the house, end of the garage, and end of the house.
Next string in, linear dimension, end of the house, end of the opening, place it at the next string in, continue to there and to there, enter. Pan over to here, linear dimensions, end of the house, end of the opening, place it down here. Again, I'm just slowing down a bit so I can see that word, end point, echo, to make sure I'm on top of that no-plot view.
Continue to the end of the house. While I'm here, linear dimension, end of the house, end of the house, place it right about here, and I'm purposely placing it so that this dimension line cannot be confused with geometry on the house. Linear dimension, end of the opening, place it down, and continue to the end of the wall.
Control-S to save. I'm going to back off a bit. I think the next string I'd like to work on is the string that's going to go up here.
Well, I think what I'm going to do first is back off and get the outside of the house, because it's pretty a nice idea to get your overall dimensions done first. Dimension outside of the house to the outside of the house here. Place it here.
Zoom in a bit. Linear dimension. I'm going to be going from the end of the garage to the end of this pop-out here.
Place my string, the next one in. I will then continue to here. I'm then going up my walls, looking at my handouts, making sure that I'm going to the proper faces of the walls.
There's my last dimension string there, 11, 5, 11, 5. I'm doing a good job. This is great. I've got some dimension strings I want to put in for my windows.
Linear dimension, end of the opening, edge of the opening. Pop it here, again waiting for the icon to show up. Then I continue to the end.
I've got a linear dimension here. Linear dimension, end of the windows. Pull it over to here.
Then continue to the end of the building. Control-S to save. We're making some great progress.
I'm going to go on and stop the video for a second. Again, just concerned that it might be getting long. See you in a few seconds.
