Discover the intricate process of inserting an image into the title block of a drawing, using the VDCI image as an example. Learn the steps to manage the size and scaling of the image and the significance of the title block layer.
Key Insights
- The VDCI image is inserted into the top right-hand corner of the title block file during the drawing process, demonstrating the process of image insertion in such files.
- Important considerations include being on the right layer, in this case the title block layer, when inserting an image and managing its scale to ensure it fits correctly into the designated space.
- The title block plays a crucial role as it contains the line work, image, and text that will be displayed on all the sheets in a set, including attributes such as who drew it, the scale, and the sheet number.

I would now like to bring the VDCI image and put it in the top right-hand corner of our title block file. So you can see that I'm back in my VDCI title block 2234 drawing.
Normally, when we insert or reference attach information, we are on layer 0, because normally we're managing the information, the source geometry, in the source file. But again, this is our title block, and we want everything associated with this title block to be on the title block layer. So for that reason, when I bring in the image, I will bring the image in on the title block layer.
So I'm going to go to the Insert tab, and I'm going to go to Reference Attach. Now what I'd like you to see is that what's happening right now is it wants to bring in DWG files. But if I click over here on the right, you can see I have other options.
I can bring in image files, DWG files, microstation files, PDF files, point cloud variables, or drawing files. So I'm going to choose Image Files, and I'm going to go up to my C drive, go to CAD 301, and I see that I have my VDCI logo title block drawing. I'm going to go Open, and I'm going to choose the insertion point, and right now I'm going to leave the scale set at 1. So I'm going to go OK, pan over to here, and drag it in at the end of here, and I will pick.
Now you can see that I have my image brought in, but the image is not the right size, and so I need to scale it. I will go to Home tab, I will choose the scale command, and I will select the image. Enter to say I'm done selecting.
It says the base point. I will choose the end of here, and I will choose the right button, Reference. My reference distance currently goes from the end of here to the end of here, and I want to scale it up and place it there.
Zoom extends, and save. We've brought our image in. Now I'm going to undo it and show you something else.
If I go to the Insert tab, the Reference panel, I can also choose XRef Manager right here, and I can now, this is the typical way of managing XRefs. This is the more computer-easy user interface. I will do a right button, and again, I have my choices for drawings, images, DWIFs, DGNs, or PDFs, or point clouds.
I will choose Attach Image. I'm going to go up to my C drive, go to CAD 301, select the file, go Open. I see I have insertion points specified on screen, a scale factor of 1. I will go OK.
In order to make this interface disappear, I close it there, and I will pop it in at the end of here. I will zoom in, and I'll go to the Home tab. I will choose Scale, choose on the edge of the image, enter to say I'm done.
The base point is the end of here. I'll do a right button and choose Reference. My current reference distance goes from the end of here over to the end of here, and I will pop it in there.
Zoom extends, zoom real time, save the file, go back into my working drawing, upload the XRef. There's the image, and I can now save my working one drawing. Once again, I will go back into my title block drawing, save it one more time.
Now we have everything, almost, that we need in our title block. The one thing I have left is to put my line right here. I will go to Offset.
The distance was 4.5 inches. I pick, I go to the left, pick, enter, CTRL S to save, and now we have completed work on our title block. Again, the title block will be referenced into all drawings in the set.
The title block contains line work, the title block image, and text because this text will be displayed in all sheets. Down here in the bottom right, we're getting ready to work on our title block text file because we want to put attributes in the title block text file to indicate who drew it and check the drawing, what the scale is, and what the sheet number is. So again, the title block will be XRefed in.
The TBTX file will be inserted because the TBTX file will be containing attributes. Once again, zoom extends, zoom real time, save the file. So congratulations on completing your title block.
The next thing we'll start working on will be our TBTX file.
