Discover the process of modifying and upgrading the components of a 3D model, specifically focusing on changing the appearance of doorknobs on a French door. This article provides a detailed, step-by-step guide to make these modifications without affecting other identical components in the model.
Key Insights
- The article discusses the method of making a component unique so that modifications made do not impact other similar components. This is illustrated via the step of upgrading the doorknobs on a French door in a 3D model.
- An existing component can be modified using the 3D Warehouse site. By selecting a new component design, such as a decorative doorknob, and downloading it, the original component can be swapped out with the new one.
- The article also highlights the importance of managing and cleaning up component names in the 3D model. It explains how to remove unwanted components, and keep the model space neat and organized, by using the 'purge unused' feature.

The next thing I would like to do is edit the doorknobs on these French doors. I feel that these doorknobs are a little too utility for such a nice French door. Let's see if we can upgrade these into a more decorative door handle.
Because these doorknobs are all the same on all the other doors, I need to make these unique so when I modify this component it won't affect the rest of the doorknobs. So I'm going to zoom into this door, double click into that component, double click into the group of the door, and then select and hold down control to select both doorknobs, right click, make unique. And now this is a way of modifying an existing component to swap it out.
You can right click with only one selected, go to 3D Warehouse, and click Reload. This will bring you into your main 3D Warehouse site. Let's type in doors low poly to find that same category that we had in our components.
Here we'll go to Collections, and you can see Doors Low Poly by SketchUp. This is where we were at before. You can click this and we previously had Doorknob Round.
This time let's use Doorknob Decorative and click Download. As you can see, because these two were unique, it has swapped out the previous doorknob to these decorative doorknobs. I'm going to click out of this, and as you can see, it did not modify this because these two are not components and are not linked to each other.
We can make them a component just like we did for the window. So I would delete this door panel and then explode this door panel. So that way it's these four components in groups.
And let's make this a component. We know that this door is called Door DBL 3070. We can add another Door DBL 3070 panel.
And we can do French Door Panel. And then we can adjust our component axes again to be on the inside of the frame, rather than on the outside. Keeping up with the same direction, we can create.
And now let's make a copy and I'm hitting control to copy, and then we can flip. Right click, Flip Along > Red Axis. And now whenever we modify one side, it'll modify both.
And you can see that by making unique with these door handles, it only adjusted these French doors and did not adjust the other doors around our clubhouse. Before we go any further, I would like to take a look at my components and see if I can clean up some of these names. I see here I have Doorknob Lever Decorative.
Let's change this to Doorknob–Decorative. And then we'll change this Doorknob Round to Doorknob–Round. And you can see that I have other components in here that are no longer in the model such as our man garage that we deleted at the beginning.
Components will always stay in our model, even if they're deleted. To remove unwanted components, we can go into Window > Model Info and then go into Statistics and Purge Unused. This will remove any materials or components, or layers that are not associated in the actual model space.
We can purge unused and that will remove our man from our components. I will save my file. And now I can close my Components dialog box.
I will check on my floor. And the final thing that we need to do is build the roof for our clubhouse. So I will save my file one last time and I will see you in the next video.
