Explore the final steps to creating a 3D modeled carousel complete with roof, sleigh, and horses. This article offers a walkthrough of how to use tools such as the polygon and push pull tools, how to draw lines from center points, and how to manipulate surface colors.
Key Insights
- The article demonstrates how to create a nine-sided polygon shape for the carousel roof using the polygon tool and setting the dimensions to 18 feet.
- The author provides insights on how to design a peak roof for the carousel by using the move tool to pull up the roof in the blue axis and setting it at eight feet.
- Further instructions are given on how to color components of the carousel, such as the sleigh and horse saddles, and how to create unique components to allow for color variations.
Note: These materials offer prospective students a preview of how our classes are structured. Students enrolled in this course will receive access to the full set of materials, including video lectures, project-based assignments, and instructor feedback.
So in this video we will finish our carousel. The first thing that we can do is we can edit unhide right here all to bring back our sleigh and horses as we aren't going to be modeling anything inside of here so we don't really need to hide it.
So let's create the roof of our carousel. So let's find this this center point right here and let's go to our polygon tool to begin our roof. Select this and we'll click this center point.
Before we select let's make sure that our sides are correct. I see that my sides are currently at nine and I think that's okay. We'll make this a nine-sided polygon shape.
So let's drag it out in the red direction. Let's type 18 feet. Enter.
And now go into our push pull tool. Let's click this and then drag it up. Let's go 12 inches.
So 12. Enter. Let's scale this edge.
So select click this piece. Let's create a nice kind of tapered top to this. So let's click this edge and then let's go to the scale tool.
I'm clicking on this angle and now toggling control to scale about center. We'll click one time out here and before clicking anywhere else now let's type the number of this scale. So let's type 1.05 as we only want to scale this out about five percent larger than what's there.
I'm going to click enter and as we kind of deselect and then orbit down we can see we have this nice tapered edge for the top of our carousel. Now let's create a nice kind of pitched kind of tent canopy for this roof. The easiest way to do this would be to use auto fold.
So first let's click this and right click find center. Now we will draw a series of lines from the center point. We'll do we'll click that and then we'll click escape to end that that task.
We'll click here to here here to here here to here here to here so on as we go all the way around this model connecting every corner point to the center. Now deselecting everything we will go into our move tool. We will click once in this middle and then moving up in the blue axis we can see now we're starting to pull this up in a nice kind of circus tent like like shape and so let's move this up eight feet.
So I'll type in eight feet and enter and now we have a nice peaked roof for our carousel. Let's triple click this geometry right click make group. Now I'll save my file.
All right so I no longer need any of our guidelines or guide points so I will go to edit delete guides. You see those guys right there deleted and the last thing that I want to do is edit our components for our horses and for our sleigh. So let's hide this roof so we have a better access to see what's going on.
So I will click this roof and then right click hide and I will zoom into our sleigh. So I like to change the color of the sleigh to match the saddle of the horse. My saddle of my horse is pink but your saddle may be a different color.
If I was to go into this model double click into this group and double click into this component you can see that when I select certain faces that this is also being selected. That is because these are components right here carousel sleigh so they are all connected. If I go to my paint bucket tool and then holding down ALT to get my eyedropper I can pre-select this saddle color.
My color is a02 however yours may be a different color and then holding down the shift key to paint all of the surface that color and then I will go into my select and I'll click out and out again to zoom out. You can also click escape to deselect as well. All right so there we have our nice sleigh colors that are pink.
And you know what I think I want to make this horse a special horse. I want this one to have a specific color however if I was to zoom and double click into this horse and if I wanted to change the saddle to this nice blue color you can see that it changes all the horses. But I only want to change this one horse so how do I do that? So I want to undo that and I'm going to go back to my select and I'm going to click my escape key on my keyboard twice to get out of that.
So one thing that we can do and I want you to have careful notice looking at in our components dialog box. I'm going to make this double click into this group and only select this horse. I'm going to right click and I want to say make unique.
All of a sudden we now create a new horse in our components because we made a unique component from this original. If I was to double click into this component I am now able to edit only this horse. So I will first escape out of this and I want to rename this carousel horse.
I'm going to rename this carousel horse dash blue saddle and then hit ENTER and I'm going to double click and as you can see I can place you know these horse now. So I'm going to escape and I'm going to double click into this horse and I want to paint this saddle blue. So I'll go to my materials I'm going to scroll down to a nice kind of blue color.
I'm going to choose this color i03. I'm going to paint that as my saddle and then I'm going to select. Now as you can see I only changed this one horse.
If I was to select this horse I can put in the blue saddle and I can select this one and I can bring in the pink saddle. It is much more useful to make unique components rather than explode components into groups. So I will undo this I will go to my select tool I will zoom extents I will go to edit unhide all to bring back my roof.
I'm going to zoom out a bit further so I can see everything all at once and now we have completed our carousel. Congratulations we've learned a lot of great techniques in this. So I'm going to save my file and in the next video series we're going to learn about topography and how to create three-dimensional ground planes.
I'll see you in the next video.
