Discover how to enhance your section views in architectural projects by adjusting detail levels, applying view templates, and adding room tags. Learn tips for making your views more detailed and consistent, giving them a professional touch.
Key Insights
- One way to improve your section views is by ensuring they are set to the appropriate detail level. For instance, adjusting the detail level from coarse to medium can reveal finer elements such as the metal decking in the floor and the components of the roof structure.
- Applying a view template, like the architectural section, can enforce consistent graphics throughout your section views. This not only enhances the visual coherence but also ensures the correct scale and settings are used across all views.
- Adding room tags to your views can add context and clarity. By turning on rooms in the view template, you can annotate each space, giving viewers a clearer understanding of how the different parts of the project connect.

When you get into cleanup your section views, one of the things that you're going to want to do is make sure that they're all set to the proper detail level. And so right now they're all set to coarse. And so what I could do is I can go into one of my section views here for my project browser.
And I'm going to go ahead and I'm actually going to just apply the view template that already exists in here. We have one that is just called architectural section. And the scale looks appropriate so I don't have to worry about turning that off.
But I could use the settings that are already in here. And I can make sure that that detail level is set to medium because that's what I want it to be for all these views. And then hit okay.
And now you can see that we are starting to see some of the detail in the metal decking for the floor. And some of the stuff that makes up the roof structure instead of it just being this big thick piece on there. So I can take that section view template and I can actually apply it to all of these ones here by selecting these views.
And then right click and saying apply view template to apply that architectural section. And so now all of those views have that view template applied. If I were to go to my A501 you can see the detail level has now been cranked up to medium.
And same with the one that we were working on before here. And so I could do some of the same things that we did with our elevation views where we adjust these grids so that they're not overlapping. And just making sure we have consistent graphics throughout.
Another thing we can do to kind of spruce up these views is we can add the room tag on here. And so if I were to go in to this view I can go to room tag from my annotate tab here. And it seems like rooms were turned off in this view.
So what's happening is I can look at the view template and I can turn on rooms in that template. So I would go to the overrides here. Find rooms and then turn that on.
It's kind of an interesting thing for them to have turned off by default. And then we can add the room tag into these spaces here. And this might get a little tedious so I might not tag those ones.
But essentially you could add those tags and that gives it a little bit of context so you can start to see where some of these things are showing up. And so just making rooms visible by you know entering the keyboard shortcut RT which is room tag and turning on making sure that's turned on in this view. One thing that I want to point out for this process we went through for applying that view template by doing this kind of thing here is what we did is we didn't assign the view template we just simply applied it.
So assigning it means it's going to show up here. If I were to assign it to all three of those views now then that's always going to govern what happens in those views versus before all we did was apply it for that one time. So in cases like this where I'm adding these room tags one of the things that we can do to help with a little bit of clarity is I can selectively half tone some elements.
And so now that I've got the room tags added there I can go in and I can say okay well this is good to see but it's clearly in the background and so I can select these elements and then I can right click override graphics in view by element which means just the ones that I have selected and then I can check half tone to half tone those elements. And so now they're going to be a light gray back behind these pieces here. And so I could do the same thing for the level one fixtures override graphics in view by element check the half tone box and hit OK.
If for some reason you wanted to undo that operation you could right click override graphics in view by element and then you can just hit reset here or simply uncheck the half tone. So that's going to be 501 and we'll do the same thing on 502 and this should be a little easier since everything's kind of already been applied. But I can go in and I can just add the room tags and these views are not quite as interesting as the other ones were but they do still have value of course.
And there we go. Now we've got our plan views our elevation views and our section views all set up. Now we're going to create a few 3D views and go over some of the graphic options we have to create a really nice looking view without actually going through the rendering process.
