Explore the process of adjusting area names, adding leaders, and creating color schemes for different area types in a digital layout plan. This walkthrough provides essential insights into enhancing the readability and clarity of your architectural plans using specific software features and techniques.
Key Insights
- Names can be adjusted for different areas in the layout to provide more clarity. This includes renaming common areas to specific labels such as 'lobby', 'stairwell', and 'office area'.
- Leaders can be added to area labels to improve readability, especially when the label doesn't fit within the area. This involves moving out the leader to the desired position and adjusting its alignment if necessary.
- Custom color schemes can be applied to distinguish different types of areas. These color schemes are particularly important in printed sheets where boundary lines may not be easily discernible. The area color can be changed to avoid similarity with other areas, improving differentiation.

First thing we'll do here is we're going to go ahead and adjust some of these names. And so instead of calling this area, I'm going to go ahead and call it lobby. And for the stairs, you might have to hit TAB a few times to get there.
It's also not good to just leave this in, as we know from previous lessons, so we'll add the leader and then we can move it out like this, just like with room tags, it works exactly the same way. But I'll call this one stairwell. And we'll do the same thing, we'll call this office area.
And then we have our restroom. And it doesn't really fit in there. We'll use the leader option and move it out.
Sometimes you'll notice it's hard to keep it nice and straight. And so what I do is I'll make it very unstraight and then move it back so that it's easier to adjust. Okay, and then this one just hitting tab a number of times till I get to the area tag.
But this one will be stairwell. And we'll do the same thing by setting the leader and moving it out. Now we've got all of our different areas designated, I'll kind of move these around so it's easier to see.
And what we can do is we can actually apply the same view template that we were using for the gross area. Because it's a good start for us. And then we can create our own based on what we want the rental area to look like.
If I just say, gross area plan and hit, okay, it'll get rid of the graphic items that we wanted to remove. And then I can just go ahead and I can select the gross area again. And I can set it to none.
Which means all we did is just use that gross area view template as a starting point. And to finalize setting this up or the graphics for this we can go in and we can add our color fill legend from the annotate tab. And like I mentioned before, this one's actually really important because there's no easy way to tell how the boundaries are drawn other than this blue and bluish purple line here.
And so it's hard to tell on a printed sheet where it's drawn. So this makes it easier for us. If I add a color scheme which will be rentable areas and hit okay, you can see it'll use the area types that we've designated to create a color scheme.
Now one thing you may notice is that this area, the building common area is a very similar color to what we have for gross area. So it's probably a good idea to change that. So I'll go ahead and select my legend and edit the scheme.
And you can see here's the rentable area. And I can go ahead and I can change this color, the RGB 156, to something different. And that's completely up to you.
In this case, maybe we'll go to a more of a reddish brown color so that it can kind of blend in and stand out all at the same time so it's not too bright. And now we can clearly see which one are our building common areas, office areas, and our major vertical penetrations. And at this point, we can do the same thing we did with the view template so that we can apply all these settings to level two.
So I'll go to my view tab, view templates, create template from current view. And this one we will call rentable area plan. The same drill with the gross versus the rentable area.
Whatever we want to include, we want to make sure we have selected. And so I'll hit OK. And we're good to go with our level one plan.
There's some things we'll do with this legend once we get it all finalized. But at this point, we are all set and ready to move on to level two.
