Creating and Adjusting Building Sections for Documentation.

Adding and Adjusting Building Sections for Improved Documentation and Visualization

Learn how to refine your building sections in your project by adding more details and adjusting their extents. This article offers step-by-step guidelines on creating new sections, adjusting section extents, and creating sheets for the section views.

Key Insights

  • The article provides a comprehensive guide on creating new sections in your building design. It explains how to copy existing sections and place them in areas that will give more detailed views of the design, like areas that cut through doors or unique design elements.
  • Adjusting section extents closer to the building is crucial for adding dimensions and ensuring that tags are not obstructed. The article also advises on the importance of maintaining consistency in documenting the sections and aligning their 'tails' to prevent interference with the view title on the sheet.
  • Creating a sheet index, picking the right title block and adding the required revisions are necessary steps for finalizing the building sections. The article further explains how to save and position these sections on the sheet, adjust view titles, and create view templates for uniform graphics across all sections.

Now that we have a standard for our building sections, what I'd like to do is add a couple more. And so this is a good one here because it cuts through the elevator and it shows some pretty good variation in the building. But I think I want to add another one through this area so that we can see how that works out.

And so I can literally just take this one and use the copy tool and copy it across like that. And I'll just have it kind of cut through these doors here. So that gives me my next section.

And then I want another one that cuts through this area because that's a pretty unique part of our design as well. So I'll just have it cut across. And that'll give us a few more sections.

And I had copy multiple on and got a little happy with the clicking there, but no big deal. And so with those sections created, we can go ahead and adjust them accordingly. And so these ones here and here, and even this one, as they were created, they associated themselves with the scope box.

And so they adjusted their extents. And so at this point, what I would do is I would go into my Level 1 plan, and then I would want to adjust my section extents so that they're in closer to the building here. And this is important because once we start adding dimensions, we're going to want to make sure that we can clear these tags and that they're not in the way.

Also, when this view is on a sheet now, if these tails are all the way down, as you see here, then what's going to happen is that's going to interact with our view title in a way that we don't want. We want to bring those in and try to stay consistent with how we document these things. Notice I'm also keeping them pretty lined up between the different heads like that.

And now we have it set up in a way that seems to work out pretty well. And so we can start creating our sheets for those section views. And so if I were to go down to my sheet index, you can see that we're ready for our A5 sheets.

So I'm going to go ahead and right-click here on sheets, and then I can do new sheets. That's kind of like the shortcut for creating sheets. Whenever you create one, you want to make sure that you pick the right title block here.

And this one's going to be A501, and I'll call it Building Sections. And then since this is a sheet that's going to be part of our final, I can add that revision at this point in time here. And it should show up as the first one because the midterm wasn't part of this submittal.

And now we can go ahead and add our first two sections, so one and two on here. So here's section one. And every time this pops up, for me personally, I just hit the save to project because there's no such thing as saving too often, right? And then I'll throw in section two as well.

And these are the ones that need a little bit of adjustment because I definitely don't need it to go that far over. And I want to make sure I grab that view title and then just kind of tuck these in a bit. So the same thing with the level lines, they don't need to be that far off the page.

And that allows me to position this view in a better location than I would be forced to if it were that far over. So I can push it further to the left and maintain that column that I keep talking about for our notes. So just like our building elevations, I like to have the levels lined up on one side here.

And I'll just do that by drawing that line, moving it over, and then of course deleting that line because we definitely don't need that as part of our project. And then I'll bring this guy over so that it's a little bit tighter. And you can see here that section two on A501 is now identified here, which is cool.

And then I can go in and I can adjust my view title to pull it back a bit and do the same thing here. Just making sure they line up and then adjusting this one. So that's over to the side there.

Other things that you'll want to look out for, you can see my section tail is not quite going down below the building and it's just kind of getting wrapped up into this junk here. And so we want to move it down so that you can see it a bit. And so these ones are a little low, so I can move those up vertically a bit.

And at the same time, I'll want to actually make some adjustments to my view crop here. And because this section is associated with the scope box, I can't make that change. If I change this to none, then I can go in and I can make that adjustment.

And so now I'll do the same thing with the other two sections. And then we can create a view template for our section specifically so that they all have the same graphics.
