Discover the process of creating a single PDF that combines multiple detail views, a skill that can be essential for presenting comprehensive project designs. This walkthrough provides step-by-step instructions on how to efficiently navigate the print dialog box, select the appropriate views, and set up the final PDF output.
Key Insights
- The print dialog box in the application menu allows the user to combine multiple selected views and sheets into a single PDF file, preventing the creation of multiple separate PDFs. The print range must be set to 'selected views/sheets' to facilitate this.
- The user can select specific detail views to include in the PDF. It's important to view only the necessary elements, for example, 'sheets' can be unchecked if not needed, leaving only the 'views' to be included in the PDF.
- The PDF printer settings should be carefully adjusted to ensure high-quality output. Recommended selections include setting orientation to landscape, paper placement to center, zoom to 100%, raster quality to high, and colors to grayscale.

In this video, we're going to create a PDF that includes the three details that we've created thus far, which you'll then submit as your midterm submittal. To create our PDF, we're going to print and use a PDF printer. So you can go to the application menu, print, or you can just simply select CTRL P, and that opens up our print dialog box.
And you'll want to select the printer that is your, that has your PDF driver, and under file, select combine multiple selected views and sheets into a single file. And what that will do is create the three views and combine them into one PDF so you don't have three separate PDFs. And then under print range, we're going to select selected views slash sheets, and then under that, we'll click the select button.
And this is going to give you a list of all the views in your project. So just select check none, just to make sure nothing is selected by accident. And then you can show either sheets or views.
Right now we're showing both. We don't need to show any sheets right now, so let's just uncheck sheets. And then that just leaves views, so you'll notice all of the sheet views have been removed from our list.
And then now, let's go and select the detail views that we've created. So the first one listed here is the enlarged elevation, so just check that one off. And then scroll down until you find our plan detail, window jam, check that.
And then scroll down and then towards the bottom, you'll see our section detail, windowsill, and then select that. And then once you click okay, you'll be taken back to the print dialog box. Sometimes it'll prompt you whether or not you want to save that selection, which you can then name as progress set or something like that.
And then the last thing we want to do here is just take a look at our settings for the printer and click the setup button. And under here, we can just keep it on letter as the paper size. Orientation, let's set that to landscape.
And then under paper placement, select center. Zoom, we'll keep it at 100%, so it'll be the scale that we set our views to. And then vector processing will be okay.
Raster quality can be high. Colors, we can just set that to grayscale. And then don't worry about any of the other options here.
We can just click okay. And I'm going to select no for saving these settings and then click okay. And then it's going to ask you where you want to save these files.
And you can just browse to wherever you want to click. Click desktop. And then let's rename this file BIM303-Midterm.
Select save. And this window may look different depending on the PDF driver that you're using on your computer. And normally it will give you a, it'll open up the PDF that we just created in the PDF software that you have.
And you'll notice now we have all of our details in one PDF. And that concludes this video and lesson two. In the next lesson, we're going to look at importing details.
