Explore the meticulous process of planning and annotating architectural floor plans in a visual presentation. From denoting specific features like garage doors, elevators, and meeting areas to explaining the importance of keynotes and Delta numbers, this article breaks down the essential components of a basement floor plan.
Key Insights
- The article underscores the importance of clear and specific annotations when planning architectural floor plans, with the example demonstrating how each room and feature, such as the garage, mudroom, and elevator, are marked and identified.
- Keynotes play a significant role in architectural planning, being unique to each page of the floorplans and providing detailed explanations for specific features. For instance, Keynote 7 in the example explains the facade of the finished wall above the foundation wall system.
- The use of 'Delta' numbers is also highlighted in the planning process. These numbers are related to review dates and can offer insights about the progression and changes made to the plan over time.

38—Planos de Piso—Nivel 1—Parte 1 I’m going to zoom in a little, so we can see a little more of the house. So, again, what I have here is that I have my garage doors here, which provide access to the garage. Here is the garage area.
I have a door right here that takes me to the mudroom—a space traditionally used to remove or leave shoes. I can go up a couple of steps. I have a small gathering area, and I have an elevator up here on the left. I have a staircase that leads to the upper level.
So I'm back in this small gathering area. I can move forward and back. There is a door here that leads to a guest room or an additional space at this level. So, again, I have the garage, a mudroom, the elevator, and a gathering area.
And I also have my bonus room back there. So I'm going to go back a little and just check the sheet. At the bottom right, I have the sheet number, which is 2.2.
I’m showing the sheet name, which is the Basement Plan. I’m showing the project number, and I’m showing the review dates provided by the regulatory agencies. I'm going to get closer to my keynotes.
And again, these keynotes are unique to this page. You can see that here in the drawing, it says Keynote 7. And Keynote 7 says, "Face of finished wall above foundation wall system." Here I have Keynote 5, which refers to an isolated crawlspace with ventilation. If you look here, you can see the bubble. And again, this bubble is Delta 2—you can see that Delta 2 was issued on January 18.
So, here is the bubble with the Delta number. The Delta number for revisions is included up here. And I have my keynotes.
You will also see that I have Keynote 11, which notes "Railing, see detail, " and I will show that later. When I zoom in, it says "Railing, see Detail 3 on Sheet D7.2." This means that when you consult the construction documents and see Keynote 11, the railing detail is found on page D7.2, Detail 3.
And I'm just going to pan. Just so you know, here is Keynote 11 that references the railing at the staircase. So, again, we have Keynote 11, railing at the stair.
Keynote 3 and the associated notes are correctly placed.
