## Overview

This course is the entry point for anyone considering a career as an electrician. It covers the fundamentals every apprentice needs: how electricity works at the atomic level, the language and terminology of the trade, and the full path from generation through transmission and distribution to the end user. Students gain a working understanding of industry standards, electrician employability across local and national markets, and the Department of Labor's pathway into apprenticeship.

The course also covers safe practices, hazard identification, preventative action on the job site, and the professionalism expected of electricians in their interactions with personnel, superiors, customers, and the public. By the end of the course, students will earn two recognized industry credentials: OSHA 10 and NFPA 70E. These certifications give graduates a tangible, resume-ready qualification before they ever step onto a job site, alongside the foundational knowledge to succeed in their next step toward becoming a licensed electrician.

Suggested textbooks include Ugly's Electrical References (2026), Delmar's Standard Textbook of Electricity, the National Electrical Code (2026), the 2025 California Electrical Code of Regulations (International Code Council), and the American Electrician's Handbook (McGraw-Hill Professional).
